As the energy price cap surges to £1,738, window expert reveals how to cut £350 off the average UK household’s yearly energy bills while enhancing thermal efficiency.

This month (January 2025) the UK’s energy bill cap rose by 1.2%, causing many Brits to feel the pinch. Cornwall Insight has also predicted the figure will rise further to £1,762 in April.

Research from Money Advice Trust found a staggering 6.7 million people planned to cut back on baths and showers to lessen the financial pressure of energy bills, and 7.4 million intended to reduce their spending on essentials, such as food, toiletries and clothing.

However, window experts Evowrap has revealed how Brits can increase their window’s energy efficiency to cut costs without sacrificing comfort, as 18% of the home’s heat is reportedly lost through windows.

Evowrap’s research showed window films offered the biggest savings, with the potential to cut yearly energy costs by £349.90! This energy-saving method costs an estimated £47 per square meter, and within five years, it could result in £1,749.50 total savings.

Window films are thick laminate materials with insulating properties and can reduce a window’s heat loss by 33%. However, properties with both gas and electricity (including air conditioning) will see the biggest savings, whereas homes with just gas are predicted to reduce their annual energy bills by £73.66.

Thermal curtains were found to provide the second highest annual savings of £291 while costing as little as £18 depending on the heat efficiency. If buying new isn’t an option, lining existing curtains with warming materials can enhance the insulating properties.

Although often considered the most effective heat retention method, double-glazed windows were cited as having the third highest savings of £235, but with the upfront cost averaging between £5,000 and £7,000.

Paul Foster, Managing Director at EvoWrap, said: “Energy bills have been a burden on many UK households for years and many are still feeling the pressure. It’s worrying to hear how many people are planning to cut back on essentials and basic needs to afford their heating.

“A lot of the time, a home’s thermal efficiency can improve, and doing so will break the cycle of turning the heating on only to lose the warmth to draughts and poor insulation.

“Of course, not all options are available to everyone when they require upfront investments, especially if cost is at the forefront of the choice. However, small changes like draught-excluder strips, sealants, and adding an insulating layer to curtains can dramatically improve heat retention, making your home much more comfortable and lowering your bills.”
