To commemorate Remembrance Day, a beautiful display of poppies was unveiled at Berkeley Homes’ Broadacres development in Southwater, West Sussex on Thursday 8th November. Representatives from the Southwater Junior Academy who created the poppies, were joined by the Broadacres Sales Team to recognise 100 years since the end of World War I.
Inspired by the clay poppies outside the Tower of London, children from the Southwater Junior Academy, on Worthing Road, hand-crafted 480 cardboard poppies with bamboo stalks and placed them outside the beautiful show home at Berkeley Homes Broadacres development, just opposite the academy. Organised by the Pupil Council, each pupil cut, painted and created their own individual poppy as part of the display.
Jeremy Chapman, Managing Director at Berkeley Homes (Southern) East, comments: “A huge thank you to all the pupils and staff at Southwater Junior Academy for creating such a spectacular tribute for Remembrance Day. The pupils will be able to see their poppies every day, a constant reminder of their commitment and compassion to such a meaningful project. At Berkeley Homes, we like to engage with the local communities we build in and this collection of poppies at Broadacres has been a truly beautiful way to honour the 100-year anniversary of Armistice Day.”
Headteacher of Southwater Junior Academy, Mrs Rebecca Toogood, comments: “The staff and pupils at Southwater Junior Academy understand the importance of commemorating those, past and present, who have served, sacrificed and changed our world. We’ve been exploring the significance of this year’s remembrance with the children, recognising that it is 100 years since the First World War ended. The experiences of those who lived through that time has shaped the world we live in today so it’s important that we teach young people to understand the sacrifices and achievements of the First World War generation. Along with the rest of the staff at Southwater Junior Academy, I’m extremely proud of our pupils and the magnificent tribute they have created at Broadacres.”
