Dr. Ronald Walcott’s rise as a pioneer in the telecommunications industry started about 15 years ago when he became the head of the department at Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (TSTT). From there, he ascended the ranks and was promoted to mobile services executive vice president. He would later become the CEO of TSTT, completely transforming the company from the inside out.
“In 2014, I was promoted to the chief executive officer position at TSTT until September 2020,” said Walcott, who redefined the telecom landscape through his visionary leadership. During his tenure, he spearheaded a five-year plan, placing a premium on digital transformation, modernizing networks, and enhancing customer service.
“It’s important to note that cybersecurity was on top of mind even during my tenure at TSTT,” said Walcott. “When I left in 2020, my business partners and I were keen on expanding and exploring cybersecurity and cybertechnologies, so we created a company called Precision Cybertechnologies.”

He’s worked with some of the largest companies in the world, including the International Development Bank, where he was tasked with assessing an intense ransomware attack on a government legal infrastructure.
“We overcame that through very robust program management,” Walcott explained. “We activated our global network – so we had people on this project from all parts of the world, and we brought in a couple of our top-rated consultants to be part of the underground support. Collectively, we were able to resolve and remediate that matter. And now, that agency is one of the most secure, I would say, in the region.”

Dr. Ronald Walcott holds several degrees in financial management, including an undergraduate degree, MBA, and DBA. “Every organization has different resources,” Walcott explained. “They have different skill sets, budgets, and sizes. Even two companies that may look relatively similar can significantly differ in the fundamentals. So, you have to be grounded in the fundamentals. However, you also have to be able to use your expertise, experience, creativity, and collaboration to ensure that you are married to them effectively and efficiently.”

In the early days of his career, cyber-defense centered around things like signatures, cyber-attack frameworks, and tools being used as antivirus software, and then he moved into endpoint security. However, Walcott says that companies must move from a defensive standpoint to an offense.
“AI has changed the infrastructure as it pertains to defense, how AI operates through behavioral patterns,” he shared in a recent interview. “So you don’t necessarily look for signatures because signatures mean you know what transpired before. Zero-day attacks mean that they knew. AI allows for predictive analysis, anomaly detection, and behavioral analysis. It allows for advanced threat detection.”

“This is a critical part of the economic framework that we see ourselves being able to assist and to ensure that they can operate in this new digital space,” Walcott said. “That will be beneficial for everyone.”
