# World stocks rally, Nikkei closes at 33-year peak

By Dhara Ranasinghe

LONDON (Reuters) -World stocks rose to a two-week peak on Monday, with Japan’s Nikkei closing at its highest level in 33 years, drawing support from signs that cooling inflation might temper central banks’ appetite to further hike rates.

European shares rallied and U.S. equity [futures pointed to a positive open](https://www.financedigest.com/a-new-era-of-open-banking-is-here-a-look-at-the-future-of-payments.html "A new era of open banking is here: A look at the future of payments ") for Wall Street, but trading volumes across equity markets fell ahead of the U.S. July 4 holiday.

In Asia, a Bank of Japan survey showed [business sentiment improved](https://www.financedigest.com/how-businesses-can-improve-payroll-recruitment.html "How Businesses Can Improve Payroll Recruitment") in the second quarter, while the Caixin manufacturing survey dipped to 50.5, from 50.9 in May, showing a slowdown in China’s factory activity. That slightly beat [market forecasts](https://www.financedigest.com/sand-washer-market-forecast-and-trends-analysis-research-report-2021-to-2031.html "Sand Washer Market Forecast and Trends Analysis Research Report 2021 to 2031"), but underlined the weakening economic trend.

Earlier this month, the company said it would increase its dividend floor through 2025 while trimming expected investment, as it sought to make rewarding shareholders a priority. Pleasing them has become a focus as Naturgy considers changes that could reshape the company and after arguments over the potential appointment of a chief executive. Naturgy’s first-half net profit jumped to 1.05 billion euros (.16 billion), boosted by its liquefied natural gas (LNG) business. Shares were down 0.2% in mid-morning trading, bucking deeper declines, in particular for Spain’s blue-chip banks and utilities after a general election on Sunday produced no clear winner. Renta 4 Banco analyst Angel Perez Llamazares said Naturgy performed better than expected, adding “cash flows also beat our expectation,” and debt fell more than expected. After natural gas prices hit record levels last year, Naturgy said a fall in procurement costs this year and hedging gains had boosed profits. In the first half of the year, the company “exceeded the objectives of operating efficiency, cash generation, investment materialisation and debt reduction,” Executive Chairman and CEO Francisco Reynes said. After rival Iberdrola named a separate CEO last year, Naturgy is the only large energy company in Spain to combine the roles of executive chairman and CEO. Earlier this month, the company raised the dividend floor to 1.40 euros a share, from 1.20 euros. Operating profit (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) is expected to reach 5.1 billion euros, compared with a previous guidance of 4.8 billion euros. It said it was targeting net profit of 1.8 billion euros in 2025. Naturgy also relaunched its plan to split regulated infrastructure operations and liberalised energy businesses into two listed companies. The project had been suspended after the Ukraine war disrupted energy markets and analysts are still sceptical. “We believe it is unlikely that Naturgy will be able to implement its asset split in the short term and it is also unlikely that a big change in the shareholding of the company would occur,” said RBC analyst Fernando Garcia. China’s blue-chip stocks rose on hopes of more policy easing after the country’s central bank said it would implement prudent monetary policy in a “precise and forceful manner” to support economic growth and employment.

## WEAK YEN

The prospect of a further U.S. [rate rise](https://www.financedigest.com/analysis-traders-ready-for-wilder-swings-as-rate-rises-stoke-volatility.html "Analysis: Traders ready for wilder swings as rate rises stoke volatility") and the Bank of Japan’s staunch commitment to super-easy monetary policy continues to underpin the dollar against the yen.

The dollar stood at 144.72 yen on Monday, after [hitting an eight-month peak of 145.07 last week](https://www.financedigest.com/ftse-100-hits-3-week-high-unfazed-by-latest-inflation-surge.html "FTSE 100 hits 3-week high, unfazed by latest inflation surge") before the risk of Japanese intervention slowed its ascent.

The [euro was likewise firm at 157.66 yen](https://www.financedigest.com/asia-shares-subdued-yen-shunned-as-euro-shines.html "Asia shares subdued, yen shunned as euro shines"), and just off its recent 15-year top of 158.01. The single currency was last down 0.25% at $1.0883.

Sentiment had been soothed on Friday by a modest downward surprise in U.S. inflation while a flat reading for consumer spending suggested the Federal Reserve’s [rate hikes](https://www.financedigest.com/investors-increase-bets-on-uk-recession-as-rate-hikes-bite.html "Investors increase bets on UK recession as rate hikes bite") were having an impact, albeit gradual.

Debt markets, however, still imply around an 87% chance of the [Fed hiking](https://www.financedigest.com/dollar-gains-as-wall-street-retreats-on-future-fed-hikes.html "Dollar gains as Wall Street retreats on future Fed hikes") to 5.25-5.5% this month, and a 40% probability of yet a further rise by November.

Key U.S. data this week include closely watched surveys on manufacturing and services, [job openings](https://www.financedigest.com/dollar-dips-as-job-openings-fall-fed-meeting-in-focus.html "Dollar dips as job openings fall, Fed meeting in focus") and the June payrolls report. Michael Feroli, a JPMorgan economist, said even these [forecasts would not be sufficient for the Fed](https://www.financedigest.com/global-grass-fed-beef-market-value-is-forecast-to-total-us-17-9-bn-by-2031.html "Global Grass Fed Beef Market value is forecast to total US$ 17.9 Bn by 2031") to avoid further tightening.

While we [see a strong](https://www.financedigest.com/boeing-supplier-senior-sees-strong-h2-as-demand-picks-up-supply-issues-ease.html "Boeing supplier Senior sees strong H2 as demand picks up, supply issues ease") case for a July hike, we still believe the two subsequent payroll reports prior to the meeting in September will show enough slowing to allow the Fed to more comfortably go on extended hold.

Turkey’s lira slipped to yet another record low beyond 26.1 per dollar, with investors’ awaiting central bank minutes later in the day after policy makers [ramped up their policy rate by 650 basis points](https://www.financedigest.com/traders-ramp-up-bets-on-75-basis-point-ecb-sept-hike-bond-yields-jump.html "Traders ramp up bets on 75 basis-point ECB Sept hike, bond yields jump") in June. That was the strongest signal of a return to orthodoxy though the hike had fallen short of [market expectations](https://www.financedigest.com/global-hid-ballast-market-expected-to-decline-with-a-cagr-of-9-8-in-the-coming-decade.html "Global HID Ballast Market Expected to Decline with a CAGR of -9.8% in the Coming Decade").

Oil rose after top exporters [Saudi Arabia](https://www.financedigest.com/sommet-education-partners-with-kingdom-of-saudi-arabias-tourism-development-fund.html "Sommet Education partners with Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Tourism Development Fund") and Russia announced supply cuts for August, overshadowing concern over a global economic slowdown and the potential for further increases in U.S. [interest rates](https://www.financedigest.com/bank-of-england-says-britain-is-coping-with-higher-interest-rates.html "Bank of England says Britain is coping with higher interest rates").

Brent rose 0.9% to $75.41 a barrel, while U.S. crude rallied 0.9% to $70.64.
