# Asset Leasing

In financial accounting, an individual asset is any property owned by an entity or a business. It is anything that can be owned or managed to create economic value and which is held or used by an entity in order to create value for the entity. This can be either tangible or intangible. One example of an asset is inventory, which is an item which cannot be [physically held by the person holding](https://www.financedigest.com/why-it-pays-for-companies-to-hold-physical-assets-in-separate-limited-companies.html "Why it pays for companies to hold physical assets in separate limited companies") it but can still be stored and tracked in order to create data.

Other examples of an asset are receivables which are those items which are received from a [customer for services](https://www.financedigest.com/how-can-financial-firms-improve-customer-service-after-the-pandemic.html "How Can Financial Firms Improve Customer Service after the Pandemic?") performed and are a liability to that business as well as a liability to the entity holding the receivables. Examples of [assets include cash](https://www.financedigest.com/british-pensions-step-up-multi-billion-pound-asset-fire-sale-as-need-for-cash-soars.html "British pensions step up multi-billion-pound asset fire sale as need for cash soars"), accounts receivable, accounts payable and capitalized interest on loans and accounts payable. Each of these categories of assets has its own classification and may have many different methods for determining its value.

There are many different [ways in which an entity may dispose of its assets](https://www.financedigest.com/4-ways-todays-investor-can-future-proof-their-assets.html "4 Ways Today’s Investor Can Future Proof their Assets"). Most entities will purchase them from other [businesses or other individuals](https://www.financedigest.com/prime-bank-and-agam-spark-lending-revolution-for-individuals-and-business.html "Prime Bank and AGAM spark lending revolution for individuals and business") who hold them as assets. Other organizations may decide to dispose of their assets by transferring them to another corporation or by liquidating their assets. A corporation can use its assets to acquire more capital to grow in size, as well as to gain other [types of financial leverage and control](https://www.financedigest.com/digital-inclination-to-drive-the-inadequately-controlled-type-ii-diabetes-treatment-market.html "Digital Inclination to drive the Inadequately Controlled Type Ii Diabetes Treatment Market") over other financial assets. In a company’s case, the assets may be sold at a discount because the [price is lower than the cost of production](https://www.financedigest.com/french-retailer-carrefour-to-freeze-prices-on-100-products-to-tackle-inflation.html "French retailer Carrefour to freeze prices on 100 products to tackle inflation").

The assets may be sold by the individual investors to a [third party](https://www.financedigest.com/why-a-replacement-to-third-party-cookies-is-key-to-post-pandemic-recovery.html "Why a replacement to third party cookies is key to post-pandemic recovery") who may purchase the assets for a price that is less than its actual cost. The assets may be transferred by lease to another person, to an organization, to a state, or to another jurisdiction. These can be classified as liquidation sales, conversion transactions, foreclosure sales and re-allocation transactions.

Asset transfer [taxes](https://www.financedigest.com/guidance-for-transfer-of-nil-rate-inheritance-tax-allowance.html "Guidance for transfer of nil-rate Inheritance Tax allowance ") are collected in different manners depending on the jurisdiction where the transfer takes place. Some jurisdictions require that the seller pays tax on the transferred asset while others require that only the transferor [must](https://www.financedigest.com/a-taxing-issue-ten-tax-invoicing-pitfalls-that-international-businesses-must-avoid.html "A taxing issue: Ten tax invoicing pitfalls that international businesses must avoid") pay tax. A few jurisdictions also require the transferor to pay taxes on the [sale of the asset](https://www.financedigest.com/pkn-orlen-says-talks-on-sale-of-lotos-assets-not-finalised-yet.html "PKN Orlen says talks on sale of Lotos assets not finalised yet") itself. For the most part, jurisdictions require that the transferor to pay tax on the difference between the sale price of the asset and the fair [market value](https://www.financedigest.com/analgesics-market-value-surpasses-us-77-3-bn-as-demand-for-nsaids-rise-at-4-1-fmi.html "Analgesics Market Value Surpasses US$ 77.3 Bn as Demand for NSAID’s Rise at 4.1%: FMI") of the asset. In some jurisdictions, the transferor must also [pay tax on any tax that the government](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-trial-lawyers-to-end-strike-after-accepting-government-pay-offer.html "UK trial lawyers to end strike after accepting government pay offer") had not taxed the seller on the amount of the transferor’s profit in the past.

The different rules on the transfer of asset ownership are important for those [businesses that are not able to invest large sums of money](https://www.financedigest.com/how-cloud-computing-saves-businesses-money.html "How cloud computing saves businesses money") in acquiring assets and for themselves. These businesses can make use of [asset leasing to manage](https://www.financedigest.com/asset-management-firms-are-using-ai-to-deliver-higher-returns-for-investors.html "Asset management firms are using AI to deliver higher returns for investors") their day-to-day operations. Asset leasing involves purchasing assets from an [organization and then assigning the ownership rights to one or more people to manage](https://www.financedigest.com/asset-management-it-solution-market-asset-management-grow-crucial-for-various-organizations-to-evaluate-entire-business.html "Asset Management IT Solution Market – Asset Management Grow Crucial for Various Organizations to Evaluate Entire Business") the asset.

The assets of the business can be used to cover a variety of expenses and can provide [funds to pay for salaries and for other expenses associated](https://www.financedigest.com/funds-from-electricity-levy-could-help-german-households-says-renewables-association.html "Funds from electricity levy could help German households, says renewables association") with running the business. [Asset leasing can provide for the protection](https://www.financedigest.com/how-to-best-protect-assets-following-major-global-shifts.html "How to Best Protect Assets Following Major Global Shifts") of a company in the event of the owner’s death. Asset leases can also be used to buy [raw materials](https://www.financedigest.com/henkel-trims-earnings-outlook-on-raw-material-price-spike.html "Henkel trims earnings outlook on raw material price spike"), equipment or supplies that will be used to run the business. Asset leasing can be used as capital for a business to purchase equipment, property, machinery, real estate, and other [investments that will be used to run the business](https://www.financedigest.com/more-businesses-investing-in-assets-like-virtual-credit-cards.html "More Businesses Investing In Assets Like Virtual Credit Cards").

Asset leasing can also be used to [finance a new business](https://www.financedigest.com/business-finance-the-fintech-evolution.html "Business finance: the fintech evolution"). This can be used to finance the acquisition of machinery, inventory, offices or office space and to expand the business and to provide for a [company’s marketing](https://www.financedigest.com/title-rubber-gloves-market-research-report-2030-top-companies-market-size-and-forecast.html "Rubber Gloves Market Research Report 2030: Top Companies, Market Size and Forecast") needs. When used to finance a new business, it can provide [funds](https://www.financedigest.com/where-can-you-start-building-your-emergency-funds.html "Where Can You Start Building Your Emergency Funds?") to purchase a building or to rent a building. It can also [provide funds for advertising and marketing efforts, which can provide a way for the new business to gain a name and a loyal customer](https://www.financedigest.com/verasity-joins-the-brightcove-marketplace-to-provide-customers-with-proprietary-ad-tech-technology.html "Verasity Joins the Brightcove Marketplace to Provide Customers With Proprietary Ad-Tech Technology") base.
