# U.S. rate outlook hits stocks, propels dollar to 20-year highs

LONDON (Reuters) – U.S. [stock futures were indicating a lower open on Friday following a slide](https://www.financedigest.com/stocks-and-gold-cheer-u-s-inflation-picture-while-dollar-slides.html "Stocks and gold cheer U.S. inflation picture, while dollar slides") in the previous session on U.S. rate hike expectations, though the rate [outlook briefly drove the dollar to its highest in 20 years](https://www.financedigest.com/2017-cfo-outlook-top-priorities-as-new-year-gets-underway.html "2017 CFO Outlook: Top Priorities as New Year Gets Underway").

Asian [stocks fell on worries](https://www.financedigest.com/stocks-falter-as-economic-worries-nag-nz-delivers-big-rate-hike.html "Stocks falter as economic worries nag, NZ delivers big rate hike") about the hit to growth from China’s zero-COVID policy.

The U.S. currency was finding favour after the Federal Reserve [raised rates](https://www.financedigest.com/european-central-bank-to-raise-deposit-rate-to-3-25-by-mid-year-reuters-poll.html "European Central Bank to raise deposit rate to 3.25% by mid-year: Reuters poll") by 50 basis points this week. The market is [pricing in a more than 90% chance of a 75 bps hike](https://www.financedigest.com/shares-fall-with-oil-prices-amid-concerns-about-u-s-fed-rate-hikes.html "Shares fall with oil prices amid concerns about U.S. Fed rate hikes") in June, according to Refinitiv data.

U.S. payrolls [data due later](https://www.financedigest.com/wall-st-seen-steady-ahead-of-inflation-data-fed-later-in-week.html "Wall St seen steady ahead of inflation data, Fed later in week") on Friday will help traders gauge the strength of the U.S. economy. Economists polled by Reuters predicted the [data would show the United States created 391,000 new jobs](https://www.financedigest.com/stocks-mixed-dollar-gains-after-robust-inflation-jobs-data.html "Stocks mixed, dollar gains after robust inflation, jobs data") in April, versus 431,000 a month earlier.

The trend is still for a strong and very tight labour market, which is feeding into [wage increases](https://www.financedigest.com/greece-to-increase-minimum-wage-again-before-election.html "Greece to increase minimum wage again, before election") and is an issue for inflation longer term,” said Gergely Majoros, a member of the investment committee at asset manager Carmignac. This made it hard for the [Fed to keep](https://www.financedigest.com/dollar-buoyant-as-robust-u-s-data-keep-fed-hawks-in-control.html "Dollar buoyant as robust U.S. data keep Fed hawks in control") prices stable, he added. [“Job creation is still too hot for the Fed](https://www.financedigest.com/stocks-sag-as-hawkish-fed-cools-china-rally-awaits-us-jobs-data.html "Stocks sag as hawkish Fed cools China rally; awaits US jobs data") to achieve its mandate.” U.S. stock index futures dropped 0.29% after the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 both slid more than 3% overnight, and the [Nasdaq Composite shed 4.99% in its biggest single-day plunge since](https://www.financedigest.com/the-nasdaq-100-on-track-to-have-its-best-week-since-march-2010.html "The Nasdaq 100 On Track to Have its Best Week Since March 2010") June 2020. \[.N\] European stocks fell 1.14% to their lowest [since mid-March and were heading](https://www.financedigest.com/dollar-retreats-headed-for-biggest-weekly-loss-since-mid-january-bitcoin-down.html "Dollar retreats, headed for biggest weekly loss since mid-January; bitcoin down") towards their worst week in two months. [Britain’s FTSE](https://www.financedigest.com/ftse-100-snaps-four-day-winning-streak-as-britains-ocado-slumps.html "FTSE 100 snaps four-day winning streak as Britain’s Ocado slumps") dropped 0.73%.

MSCI’s world equity index fell 0.35%, approaching its [lowest since](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-mortgage-approvals-hit-lowest-since-june-2020.html "UK mortgage approvals hit lowest since June 2020") Feb 2021. The [dollar hit](https://www.financedigest.com/pound-hits-10-month-peak-euro-up-as-dollar-under-pressure.html "Pound hits 10-month peak, euro up as dollar under pressure") a 20-year high of 104.06 against an index of currencies before trimming gains.

It rose 0.17% to 130.34 yen, also close to its [highest in 20 years](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-inflation-hits-40-year-record-highest-in-g7.html "UK inflation hits 40-year record, highest in G7"). The euro rose 0.45% to $1.0584, however.

The European Central Bank should raise its deposit [rate back into positive territory this year, French central bank chief Francois Villeroy de Galhau said on Friday, comments that point to his support for at least three rate hikes](https://www.financedigest.com/dollar-hits-one-month-high-against-yen-as-traders-bet-on-fed-rate-hike.html "Dollar hits one-month high against yen as traders bet on Fed rate hike") in 2022. [Sterling fell to its lowest against the dollar](https://www.financedigest.com/sterling-steadies-vs-dollar-ahead-of-boe-ecb-meetings.html "Sterling steadies vs dollar ahead of BoE, ECB meetings") in nearly two years after dropping 2.2% on Thursday. The Bank of England raised rates by 25 basis points on Thursday as expected, but two policy makers expressed caution about rushing into [future rate hikes](https://www.financedigest.com/dollar-falls-after-fed-raises-rates-forecasts-future-hike.html "Dollar falls after Fed raises rates, forecasts future hike"). Bond yields are also rising on expectations of a fast pace of [rate hikes](https://www.financedigest.com/sp-warns-of-possible-economic-blow-hit-to-japan-inc-from-boj-rate-hike.html "S&P warns of possible economic blow, hit to Japan Inc from BOJ rate hike"). The yield on U.S. 10-year [notes was last 3.0828% after crossing 3.1% overnight for the first time since November](https://www.financedigest.com/european-shares-kick-off-november-on-bright-note.html "European shares kick off November on bright note") 2018\. \[US/\] Germany’s 10-year government [bond yield](https://www.financedigest.com/wall-st-stocks-fall-bond-yields-rise-as-china-drops-quarantine-rule.html "Wall St stocks fall, bond yields rise as China drops quarantine rule") rose to 1.082%, its highest since 2014.

We [see the Ukraine war reducing global growth](https://www.financedigest.com/swedish-match-continues-to-see-strong-smoke-free-sales-growth.html "Swedish Match continues to see strong smoke-free sales growth") and increasing inflation, mostly via higher energy costs,” BlackRock analysts said. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific [shares outside Japan shed 2.69% and hit its lowest level since March 16, the day when Chinese vice premier Liu He boosted shares by pledging to support markets and the economy](https://www.financedigest.com/the-sharing-economy-whats-in-it-for-accountants.html "THE SHARING ECONOMY: WHAT’S IN IT FOR ACCOUNTANTS?"). The benchmark is down 4% from last Friday’s close, which would be its [worst week since](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-factories-suffer-worst-month-since-may-2020-as-economy-stumbles-pmi.html "UK factories suffer worst month since May 2020 as economy stumbles – PMI") mid-March. Japan’s Nikkei bucked the trend, [rising 0.69% on its return](https://www.financedigest.com/vodafone-posts-rise-in-q1-revenue-as-europe-returns-to-growth.html "Vodafone posts rise in Q1 revenue as Europe returns to growth") from a three-day holiday. Chinese blue chips lost 2.53%, the [Hong Kong](https://www.financedigest.com/screening-of-winnie-the-pooh-horror-film-cancelled-in-hong-kong.html "Screening of ‘Winnie the Pooh’ horror film cancelled in Hong Kong") benchmark fell 3.89% and China’s yuan tumbled to an 18-month low in both onshore and offshore markets. China will fight any comments and actions that distort, doubt or deny the country’s [COVID-19 response](https://www.financedigest.com/stocks-with-greater-socially-responsible-investor-demand-saw-weaker-losses-during-the-covid-19-crash.html "Stocks with greater socially responsible investor demand saw weaker losses during the COVID-19 crash") policy, state television reported on Thursday, after a meeting of the country’s highest decision-making body. [Investors said that appeared to rule out any easing](https://www.financedigest.com/chinas-patchy-covid-easing-sows-confusion-but-comforts-investors.html "China’s patchy COVID easing sows confusion but comforts investors") in the zero-COVID policy, which is slowing Chinese economic growth and snarling global supply chains. The silver lining is the expectation that new Chinese fiscal measures could come out over the weekend,” said Dickie Wong, director of research at [Hong Kong](https://www.financedigest.com/evergrande-winding-up-lawsuit-in-hong-kong-adjourned-to-nov-7.html "Evergrande winding-up lawsuit in Hong Kong adjourned to Nov 7") brokerage Kingston Securities. Oil prices climbed for a third straight session, shrugging off [concerns about global economic growth as impending European Union sanctions on Russian oil](https://www.financedigest.com/oil-near-flat-as-us-crude-stock-draw-contends-with-economic-concerns.html "Oil near flat as US crude stock draw contends with economic concerns") raised the prospect of tighter supply. Brent futures jumped 2.16% to $113.25 a barrel. U.S. crude climbed 2% to $110.41 a barrel. \[O/R\]
