**Nurturing the mental wellbeing of your staff and encouraging meditation reaps huge dividends**

**By Chris Shannon, CEO Fotech**

June 2021, Hampshire, England – Looking after the mental health and wellbeing of the people under your charge has always been an important priority for a leader – and after the challenges of the past year it’s now more crucial than ever. The pandemic’s devastating [impact on mental health](https://www.financedigest.com/the-impact-of-debt-on-your-health-and-what-you-can-do-about-it.html "The Impact of Debt On Your Health, And What You Can Do About It") is well documented, so creating an environment and processes that support wellbeing is top of any leader’s agenda. But, although people pay lip-service to it being important, how do you actually make sure that it [really is part](https://www.financedigest.com/what-hyper-converged-infrastructure-really-means-for-your-financial-institution-part-2.html "What hyper converged infrastructure really means for your financial institution (Part 2)") of the DNA of your organisation?

Nurturing the [mental health](https://www.financedigest.com/breaking-the-stigma-men-and-mental-health-in-the-world-of-investments.html "Breaking the Stigma: Men and Mental Health in the World of Investments") of your team is not only ethically and morally the right thing to do, but also it’s critical from a business perspective. Creating an environment, culture and ethos that supports and enhances the mental [health and wellbeing of your team is the fastest way to ensure that you and your business](https://www.financedigest.com/are-there-tax-breaks-for-business-health-insurance.html "Are there tax breaks for business health insurance?") continue to thrive and to prosper.

When people are struggling to cope, it’s generally not because they [lack skills](https://www.financedigest.com/lack-of-collaboration-and-skills-shortage-is-limiting-organisations-ability-to-meet-ifrs-9-requirements.html "Lack of collaboration and skills shortage is limiting organisations’ ability to meet IFRS 9 requirements"), but rather that they lack clarity. The pressure they are [facing coupled with their high anxiety levels mean they can’t focus](https://www.financedigest.com/pwc-australia-clients-staff-in-focus-as-tax-leak-faces-government-hearings.html "PwC Australia clients, staff in focus as tax leak faces government hearings"). In most companies today, people have too many projects going on at any one [time and there is a lot of ongoing transformation](https://www.financedigest.com/a-time-of-change-how-artificial-intelligence-is-transforming-insurance.html "A time of change – how artificial intelligence is transforming insurance"). Additionally, many people are in roles where they are constantly challenged by their manger – part and parcel of the role, of course, but it can represent another pressure, especially if their [mental health](https://www.financedigest.com/investment-in-mental-health-amongst-cybersecurity-professionals-set-to-increase-according-to-infosecurity-europe-poll.html "Investment in mental health amongst cybersecurity professionals set to increase according to Infosecurity Europe poll") isn’t robust.

Leaders must implement a three-pronged approach: first, you create a culture that genuinely and proactively [supports mental health and wellbeing; then, you cultivate a mindset in yourself and your team based on an understanding of mental health as something that needs to be consciously nurtured; and, finally, and perhaps most importantly of all, you lead from the front](https://www.financedigest.com/how-to-manage-burnout-and-how-leaders-should-support-employee-wellbeing-tom-keya.html "How to manage burnout and how leaders should support employee wellbeing | Tom Keya").

I believe passionately that leaders must [set a good example and walk](https://www.financedigest.com/boe-set-to-walk-the-line-between-inflation-and-recession.html "BoE set to walk the line between inflation and recession") the talk. For example, I meditate. Even if I can only find five minutes, it helps me enormously. There are well-documented and numerous benefits to meditation – including the ability it gives you to identify and to prioritise your tasks because you have clarity. Meditation helps you take a step back and ask: “Is this important?” and “Can I influence it?”.

So many people are stressed about [things that are either not important](https://www.financedigest.com/the-importance-of-helping-customers-do-things-for-themselves.html "The importance of helping customers do things for themselves"), or things over which they have no control. The ability meditation gives you to clear your mind, to step back, to see the bigger picture and to identify where to focus your [energy is hugely important](https://www.financedigest.com/factbox-europe-ramps-up-coal-imports-as-energy-supply-fears-grow.html "Factbox-Europe ramps up coal imports as energy supply fears grow").

At Fotech, we actively [discuss mental health during our regular team meetings](https://www.financedigest.com/new-zealand-pm-meets-biden-to-discuss-u-s-indo-pacific-strategy.html "New Zealand PM meets Biden to discuss U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy"). One of our wellbeing supports is [paying for everyone to have the Headspace app](https://www.financedigest.com/why-pay-by-bank-app-will-come-into-its-own-in-2022.html "Why Pay by Bank App will come into its own in 2022 "). Initially some of our engineers thought it was a little odd and wondered what they needed it for. But because we have actively encouraged people to use it, made it part of our on-going internal conversations and an [integrated part of our working lives](https://www.financedigest.com/white-bullets-integration-with-silverbullets-next-generation-context-outcomes-engine-4d-is-now-live.html "White Bullet’s integration with Silverbullet’s next generation Context Outcomes Engine, 4D, is now live"), it is now widely used by the team.

Supporting good mental health and wellbeing isn’t rocket science – you just [need to believe in what you are doing and to embed awareness across](https://www.financedigest.com/tech-awakening-needed-across-uk-workforce.html "Tech awakening needed across UK workforce") your organisation. Alongside promoting meditation, there are a host of very easy [actions leaders](https://www.financedigest.com/what-actions-can-business-leaders-in-the-finance-industry-take-to-improve-wellness.html "What actions can business leaders in the finance industry take to improve wellness?") can take – actively encouraging people to take their holiday allocation, for example, and making sure that when they do and that they properly switch off. Another easy [way to help address stressors at work is to normalise dialling into internal](https://www.financedigest.com/is-regtechs-rise-one-way-tackle-the-international-regulatory-game-of-risk.html "Is Regtech’s rise one way tackle the international regulatory game of Risk?") calls while walking the dog, perhaps, rather than sitting at your desk. In fact, just encouraging people to take a walk or to get active during the [day](https://www.financedigest.com/over-a-third-of-uk-people-think-thomas-whitmore-from-independence-day-will-be-joined-by-donald-trump-in-disneys-hall-of-presidents.html "Over a third of UK people think Thomas Whitmore from Independence Day will be joined by Donald Trump in Disney’s Hall of Presidents") is fundamentally simple and it helps give people a break from the sometimes-relentless inbox pings and video calls.

But leaders shouldn’t try to solve everything overnight. [Changing mindset](https://www.financedigest.com/dispute-management-mindset-changing-the-disputes-game.html "Dispute Management Mindset: Changing the disputes game") and culture is a gradual process. People should [challenge their own ways of working](https://www.financedigest.com/disadvantages-key-challenges-to-overcome-when-working-from-home.html "Disadvantages – key challenges to overcome when working from home"), for example, are all those calls really necessary?

Leaders who want to improve their organisations’ approach to mindfulness, meditation and good mental health can make small, incremental [changes that will significantly help people lead](https://www.financedigest.com/how-to-lead-organizational-change.html "How to Lead Organizational Change") healthier, happier, more enjoyable lives – at home and at work.
