(Reuters) -Tesla Inc on Friday posted record vehicle deliveries for the second quarter that were in line with Wall Street estimates as the electric-car maker coped with a shortage of chips and raw materials.

Tesla delivered 201,250 vehicles in total during the second quarter. Analysts had expected [Tesla](https://www.financedigest.com/tesla-earnings-investors-watching-margins-deliveries-self-driving.html) to deliver 200,258 vehicles, according to Refinitiv data.

[Shares of the company were up 3% in early trading](https://www.financedigest.com/social-trading-is-the-new-way-that-gen-z-are-getting-their-share-of-the-pie.html "Social Trading is The New Way That Gen Z Are Getting Their Share of The Pie") on Friday.

The numbers showed that strong deliveries of its Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers, its two [lower priced](https://www.financedigest.com/ks-cuts-2023-profit-outlook-on-slow-recovery-lower-potash-prices.html "K+S cuts 2023 profit outlook on slow recovery, lower potash prices") variants, offset a drop in deliveries of higher-end Model S and X variants.

[Tesla has been raising prices](https://www.financedigest.com/tesla-posts-record-quarterly-deliveries-after-price-cuts-up-4-from-q4.html "Tesla posts record quarterly deliveries after price cuts, up 4% from Q4") for its vehicles in recent months, which its billionaire boss, Elon Musk, blamed in May on “major supply chain price pressure”, especially raw materials.

He also said in early June that “Our biggest challenge is [supply chain](https://www.financedigest.com/ge-shares-slump-as-supply-chain-inflationary-woes-threaten-profit-outlook.html "GE shares slump as supply chain, inflationary woes threaten profit outlook"), especially microcontroller chips. Never seen anything like it.”

Tesla sold 21,936 cars to Chinese customers in May, rebounding from a [sales slump in April](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-retail-sales-fall-in-may-after-april-rise-outlook-less-gloomy-cbi.html "UK retail sales fall in May after April rise, outlook less gloomy: CBI"), but still well below March numbers.

MODEL S,X DELIVERIES FALL

Overall deliveries of its higher [priced Model](https://www.financedigest.com/tesla-cuts-u-s-model-s-and-model-x-prices-between-4-and-9.html "Tesla cuts U.S. Model S and Model X prices between 4% and 9%") S and X cars fell to 1,890 during the April to June period, from a meager 2,020 the preceding quarter, Tesla said.

After delays, the company [launched the Model](https://www.financedigest.com/new-charitable-commission-sharing-model-is-for-lifeprice-comparison-website-launch-bolstered-by-innovative-approach.html "New charitable commission-sharing model is for lifePrice comparison website launch bolstered by innovative approach") S Plaid in June, a high-performance version of its Model S, starting at $129,990.

A Tesla Model S Plaid [electric vehicle burst into flames on Tuesday while the owner was driving](https://www.financedigest.com/battery-swapping-spurs-kenyas-electric-motorbike-drive.html "Battery swapping spurs Kenya’s electric motorbike drive"), just three days after the car was delivered. Tesla did not have an immediate comment when contacted by Reuters.

Total production in the second quarter rose about [14% to 206,421 vehicles](https://www.financedigest.com/the-electric-vehicle-sound-generator-market-to-create-turbulence-in-automotive-sector-at-a-cagr-of-14-between-2019-and-2029.html "The Electric Vehicle Sound Generator Market to create turbulence in automotive sector at a CAGR of 14% between 2019 and 2029") from the first quarter.
