SYDNEY (Reuters) – Stocks hit a two-year low on Friday and bonds eyed big weekly losses as the prospect of U.S. [interest rates](https://www.financedigest.com/interest-rates-are-cut-to-an-all-time-low-what-will-this-mean-for-small-businesses.html "Interest rates are cut to an all-time low. What will this mean for small businesses?") rising further and faster than expected rattled investors, while a rising dollar had currency markets skittish following Japan’s intervention.

[Interest rates](https://www.financedigest.com/ecbs-centeno-says-interest-rate-close-to-peaking-if-no-new-shocks.html "ECB’s Centeno says interest rate close to peaking if no new shocks") rose sharply this week in the United States, Britain, Sweden, Switzerland and Norway – among other places – but it was Federal Reserve members’ outlook for persistently high U.S. [rates through 2023 that set](https://www.financedigest.com/bank-of-england-set-to-hike-to-4-as-rate-peak-looms.html "Bank of England set to hike to 4% as rate peak looms") off the latest round of selling.

MSCI’s [world stocks](https://www.financedigest.com/world-stocks-cling-to-upbeat-mood-dollar-stalls.html "World stocks cling to upbeat mood, dollar stalls") index touched its lowest since mid-2020 on Friday and is down about 12% in the month or so since Fed Chair Jerome Powell made clear that bringing down inflation would hurt.

S&P 500 [futures struggled to steady in the Asia session](https://www.financedigest.com/session-border-controller-sbc-market-2021-scope-of-current-and-future-industry-2025.html "Session Border Controller (SBC) Market 2021 | Scope of Current and Future Industry 2025") and fell 0.1%, while European futures were flat. MSCI’s index of [Asia shares](https://www.financedigest.com/asia-shares-creep-higher-wary-on-fed-and-boj-outlooks.html "Asia shares creep higher, wary on Fed and BOJ outlooks") outside Japan fell 1%. Unless it bounces, it is on course for the [worst month since](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-factories-suffer-worst-month-since-may-2020-as-economy-stumbles-pmi.html "UK factories suffer worst month since May 2020 as economy stumbles – PMI") March 2020.

It’s reality coming through,” said Sean Taylor, Asia-Pacific chief investment officer at DWS in [Hong Kong](https://www.financedigest.com/citadel-accelerates-hiring-push-in-hong-kong-and-london.html "Citadel accelerates hiring push in Hong Kong and London").

You had a [market that believed rates](https://www.financedigest.com/no-santa-rally-for-markets-as-central-banks-dampen-peak-rate-hopes.html "No Santa rally for markets as central banks dampen peak rate hopes") were coming down next year…now that’s changed a lot,” he said. And the [equity market](https://www.financedigest.com/equity-markets-show-strong-end-of-year-performance-in-camradatas-q4-2017-investment-research-reports.html "Equity Markets Show Strong End of Year Performance in CAMRADATA’s Q4 2017 Investment Research Reports") is now adjusting to that.

[Bond and currency markets](https://www.financedigest.com/britains-bond-market-turmoil.html "Britain’s bond market turmoil") are also unmoored, with the latest lift in U.S. [rates extending a rally in the dollar](https://www.financedigest.com/yen-sinks-as-rates-outlook-diverges-nz-dollar-tumbles.html "Yen sinks as rates outlook diverges; NZ dollar tumbles") that is starting to cause some discomfort for trading partners.

The euro and yen fell to 20-year lows on Thursday, until Japanese authorities stepped in to the market for the first [time since](https://www.financedigest.com/soccer-arsenal-reach-womens-champions-league-semis-for-first-time-since-2013.html "Soccer-Arsenal reach Women’s Champions League semis for first time since 2013") 1998 to buy yen and arrest its long slide.

The resultant spike has the yen up to 142.20 per dollar and on course for its best week in more than a month, though analysts [say the yen’s](https://www.financedigest.com/yen-trims-gains-as-possible-next-boj-governor-says-current-policy-appropriate.html "Yen trims gains as possible next BOJ governor says current policy appropriate") respite is likely to be short-lived.

Other currencies were struggling for traction. The euro was at $0.9825, barely above its low of $0.9807.

The Australian and New Zealand dollars hovered near their lowest levels since mid-2020, sterling was parked by its lowest in nearly four decades and at 7.1028 per dollar [China’s yuan is within striking distance of a record](https://www.financedigest.com/china-records-worlds-first-human-death-from-h3n8-bird-flu-who.html "China records world’s first human death from H3N8 bird flu -WHO") low. \[CNY/\]

VOLATILITY NOW

Bond markets have been in meltdown as both investors and policymakers grapple with how far short-term [rates will need to rise to tame runaway inflation](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-inflation-rate-unexpectedly-rises-to-10-4-in-february.html "UK inflation rate unexpectedly rises to 10.4% in February") around the world.

Britain is a case in point. On Thursday, a divided Bank of England [hiked rates](https://www.financedigest.com/stocks-falter-as-economic-worries-nag-nz-delivers-big-rate-hike.html "Stocks falter as economic worries nag, NZ delivers big rate hike") 50 basis points (bps), disappointing currency traders, while promising bond sales and further hikes that together with fiscal policies tanked gilts along the curve.

Two-year gilt yields are up nearly 50 bps this week, on track for their [worst week in 13 years](https://www.financedigest.com/europe-facing-its-worst-drought-in-500-years-study.html "Europe facing its worst drought in 500 years – study").

Later on Friday, new [finance minister](https://www.financedigest.com/scottish-finance-minister-kate-forbes-to-run-for-countrys-leadership.html "Scottish finance minister Kate Forbes to run for country’s leadership") Kwasi Kwarteng will announce a fiscal plan that is probably inflationary and even more bad news for gilts..

[Treasuries didn’t trade](https://www.financedigest.com/stocks-fall-treasury-yields-rise-upon-final-2022-trading-day.html "Stocks fall, Treasury yields rise upon final 2022 trading day") in Asia owing to a public holiday in Japan, but longer dated issues were dumped overnight, sending the 10-year yield up about 20 bps to 3.71%.

The 10-year was playing catch up to the newly calibrated cash rate,” said Westpac’s [head](https://www.financedigest.com/wall-st-heads-higher-as-fed-rate-hopes-dent-dollar.html "Wall St heads higher as Fed rate hopes dent dollar") of rates strategy, Damien McColough, in Sydney.

If you believe the front-end is going to peak at 4.60% can you really sustain 10-year [bond yields](https://www.financedigest.com/wall-st-stocks-fall-bond-yields-rise-as-china-drops-quarantine-rule.html "Wall St stocks fall, bond yields rise as China drops quarantine rule") at 3.70%?” he said.

“It’s very skittish price action … I think that this volatility continues in all markets in the near term (until) the [rates market](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-housing-market-may-face-perfect-storm-as-mortgage-rates-rise-house-prices-drop.html "UK housing market may face perfect storm as mortgage rates rise, house prices drop") settles.

In commodity markets, oil was on track for a small weekly loss as [rate hikes](https://www.financedigest.com/ecbs-villeroy-rate-hike-signals-strong-confidence-in-european-banks.html "ECB’s Villeroy: rate hike signals strong confidence in European banks") raise demand concerns. Brent crude futures hovered at $90.07 a barrel in Asia on Friday. \[O/R\]

Gold, which pays no income, has suffered as U.S. yields have gone up and it was last flat at $1,669 an ounce.

Bitcoin has been likewise battered amid the flight from [risky assets](https://www.financedigest.com/tough-times-and-risky-business-which-emerging-market-assets-are-a-bet-worth-taking.html "Tough times and risky business – which emerging market assets are a bet worth taking") and held at $19,423.
