NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) – A gauge of global equities edged lower and the dollar inched up on Tuesday as markets awaited word from the Federal Reserve chief after last week’s blockbuster U.S. jobs number made clear interest [rates will stay higher](https://www.financedigest.com/dollar-jumps-as-powell-flags-higher-terminal-rate.html "Dollar jumps as Powell flags higher terminal rate") for longer to combat inflation.

The Australian dollar earlier bolted higher after its central bank reiterated further increases would be needed, while the yen [gained after an unusually strong Japanese wage data](https://www.financedigest.com/dollar-trims-gains-vs-euro-after-u-s-inflation-data.html "Dollar trims gains vs euro after U.S. inflation data").

U.S. and European equity markets were mixed to lower, with the [euro and pound lower against the dollar](https://www.financedigest.com/pound-hits-10-month-peak-euro-up-as-dollar-under-pressure.html "Pound hits 10-month peak, euro up as dollar under pressure"). The broad pan-European STOXX 600 [index was up 0.04% and MSCI’s gauge of global](https://www.financedigest.com/2017-global-payroll-complexity-index-reveals.html "2017 Global Payroll Complexity Index Reveals ") stock performance shed 0.12%.

The spotlight was on central bankers, especially Fed Chief Jerome Powell, scheduled to speak at noon (1700 GMT), as stronger economic [data pointed to more stubborn inflation](https://www.financedigest.com/dollar-dips-ahead-of-inflation-data-later-this-week.html "Dollar dips ahead of inflation data later this week").

The U.S. economy is getting more attention because of Friday’s [payrolls number – almost three times greater than market expectations](https://www.financedigest.com/instant-view-us-may-payrolls-rise-up-than-expected.html "Instant View: US May payrolls rise up than expected") – and because of the upgrades in hiring over the past few months, said Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst at Convera in Washington.

The [market now see the Fed](https://www.financedigest.com/stocks-up-bond-yields-fall-as-markets-mull-a-fed-policy-pause.html "Stocks up, bond yields fall as markets mull a Fed policy pause") with the upper hand in terms of remaining on this hawkish path,” Manimbo said. What’s been really important is that the market [sees a lower likelihood of rate cuts by the end of the year.”](https://www.financedigest.com/10-year-david-goliath-crusade-finally-sees-justice-for-off-plan-spanish-property-buyers.html "10 year ‘David & Goliath’ crusade finally sees justice for off-plan Spanish property buyers")

An ECB survey on Tuesday showed euro zone [inflation expectations](https://www.financedigest.com/dollar-drops-as-inflation-cools-more-than-expected.html "Dollar drops as inflation cools more than expected") were still edging up at the end of last year, while Fed Minneapolis President Neel Kashkari said he still thought the U.S. overnight lending [rates should rise](https://www.financedigest.com/shares-slip-yields-rise-as-u-s-data-sparks-rate-hike-concerns.html "Shares slip, yields rise as U.S. data sparks rate hike concerns") to at least 5.4% from 4.5%-4.75% range.

Nobody should over react to one report,” he said, referring to Friday’s payrolls data, but he also noted the [services sector](https://www.financedigest.com/decline-in-german-services-sector-eases-raising-hopes-for-milder-recession-pmi.html "Decline in German services sector eases, raising hopes for milder recession -PMI") remained very robust.

On [Wall Street](https://www.financedigest.com/wall-street-drops-treasury-yields-gyrate-on-fed-chairman-powells-remarks.html "Wall Street drops, Treasury yields gyrate on Fed Chairman Powell’s remarks"), the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.34%, the S&P 500 lost 0.18% and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.03%.

[Asian stocks](https://www.financedigest.com/asian-stocks-rally-as-bank-jitters-calm-alibaba-lifts-mood.html "Asian stocks rally as bank jitters calm, Alibaba lifts mood") stabilized overnight after they, like most global share markets, suffered steep losses following that U.S [jobs data](https://www.financedigest.com/stocks-mixed-dollar-gains-after-robust-inflation-jobs-data.html "Stocks mixed, dollar gains after robust inflation, jobs data").

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan ended up 0.2%, but Australia’s S&P/ASX200 slipped nearly 0.5% after the Reserve Bank of Australia [delivered its ninth consecutive rate hike](https://www.financedigest.com/stocks-falter-as-economic-worries-nag-nz-delivers-big-rate-hike.html "Stocks falter as economic worries nag, NZ delivers big rate hike"). [Australia’s cash rate](https://www.financedigest.com/virgin-australia-says-high-staff-illness-rates-hampering-capacity-lifting-fares.html "Virgin Australia says high staff illness rates hampering capacity, lifting fares") now stands at 3.35%, a decade high.

DEADLY QUAKE

U.S. stock index futures [edged higher](https://www.financedigest.com/londons-ftse-100-edges-higher-set-for-fourth-weekly-gain.html "London’s FTSE 100 edges higher, set for fourth weekly gain") ahead of the start of trading in New York. Fed’s Powell’s is due to speak at 12:40 p.m. EST (1740 GMT) while President Joe Biden will deliver his [second State](https://www.financedigest.com/inflation-in-key-german-states-eases-for-second-month.html "Inflation in key German states eases for second month") of the Union address at about 9 p.m. (0200 GMT Wednesday).

The speech will [give Biden a chance to shape public](https://www.financedigest.com/japans-emperor-gives-first-public-new-years-greeting-since-2020.html "Japan’s emperor gives first public New Year’s greeting since 2020") perception of the debt ceiling, social spending, the Russian war in Ukraine and tensions with China.

Another major move in markets was oil’s jump for a second straight session on optimism about recovering demand from China and supply concerns following the shutdown of a major export terminal after an [earthquake in Turkey](https://www.financedigest.com/eus-eib-to-override-turkey-lending-ban-with-earthquake-aid.html "EU’s EIB to override Turkey lending ban with earthquake aid").

In the [bond markets](https://www.financedigest.com/us-stock-futures-bonds-rally-as-markets-flirt-with-fed-pause.html "US stock futures, bonds rally as markets flirt with Fed pause"), benchmark government bond yields crept higher, with the 10-year German Bund trading at 2.32%, compared to less than 2% three weeks ago and the benchmark 10-year Treasury note was at 3.65%.

Italy’s 10-year [yield was up around 5 basis points on the day](https://www.financedigest.com/stocks-fall-treasury-yields-rise-upon-final-2022-trading-day.html "Stocks fall, Treasury yields rise upon final 2022 trading day") at 4.197%, leaving the closely watched gap between Italy and German at around 185 bps.

Sentiment in markets is dominated by [central banks and the repricing of rates](https://www.financedigest.com/central-banks-hike-rates-again-but-a-pause-is-coming.html "Central banks hike rates again, but a pause is coming") yet again,” Kerry Craig, JPMorgan Asset Management’s global market strategist, said.

[“Equities have had a strong run since the start of the year so seeing an air pocket emerge now is no major](https://www.financedigest.com/4-trends-that-will-have-a-major-impact-on-private-equity-in-2021.html "4 Trends that will have a major impact on private equity in 2021") surprise.
