LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Reuters) -A SpaceX rocket blasted off early on Friday carrying a U.S.-French satellite designed to conduct an unprecedented [global survey](https://www.financedigest.com/new-york-catches-up-with-london-to-head-citys-global-centres-survey.html "New York catches up with London to head City’s global centres survey") of Earth’s surface waters, a mission expected to shed new light on the mechanics and consequences of climate change.

The Falcon 9 booster owned and operated by [Elon Musk’s](https://www.financedigest.com/elon-musk-and-others-urge-ai-pause-citing-risks-to-society.html "Elon Musk and others urge AI pause, citing ‘risks to society’") commercial rocket company lit up the predawn sky along California’s coast as it roared off its launch pad at the Vandenberg U.S. Space Force Base, about 160 miles (260 km) northwest of [Los Angeles](https://www.financedigest.com/patsnap-circumnavigates-northern-hemisphere-with-launch-of-los-angeles-office.html "PatSnap circumnavigates northern hemisphere with launch of Los Angeles office").

The liftoff, directed by NASA, was shown live on a U.S. space agency webcast.

The Falcon 9’s upper stage, carrying the satellite, reached orbit within nine minutes. Moments earlier, the reusable lower [stage separated from the rocket and flew itself back](https://www.financedigest.com/analysis-at-world-cup-saudi-crown-prince-moves-back-on-to-global-stage.html "Analysis-At World Cup, Saudi crown prince moves back on to global stage") to Earth, unleashing sonic booms before slowing to a gentle landing at the base.

The mission’s payload, the Surface Water and Ocean Topography satellite, or SWOT, was released to its own starting orbit about 530 miles (850 km) above the planet less than a hour after launch. Video from a camera mounted on the rocket’s upper stage showed SWOT floating away.

About a half hour later, mission control for the French space agency CNES in Toulouse, France, reported it had [recovered the first full set](https://www.financedigest.com/london-stocks-recover-set-for-weekly-drop-as-slowdown-inflation-fears-linger.html "London stocks recover; set for weekly drop as slowdown, inflation fears linger") of signals from the satellite, confirming that SWOT’s systems were operational, NASA said.

The centerpiece of the satellite is [advanced microwave radar technology to collect high-definition measurements](https://www.financedigest.com/lumen-research-and-tvision-announce-global-partnership-for-advanced-attention-first-measurement-and-media-buying.html "Lumen Research and TVision Announce Global Partnership for Advanced Attention-First Measurement and Media Buying") of oceans, lakes, reservoirs and rivers over 90% of the globe.

The data, compiled from radar sweeps at least twice every 21 days, will be used to [enhance ocean-circulation models](https://www.financedigest.com/aon-empowers-cat-modellers-to-run-any-model-on-its-enhanced-elements-10-platform.html "AON EMPOWERS CAT MODELLERS TO RUN ANY MODEL ON ITS ENHANCED ELEMENTS 10 PLATFORM"), bolster weather and climate forecasts and aid in managing freshwater supplies in drought-stricken regions, researchers say.

Components of the SUV-sized satellite were built primarily by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) near Los Angeles and CNES.

Nearly 20 [years in development with contributions from counterparts in Canada and Britain](https://www.financedigest.com/2043-the-year-britain-will-turn-cashless.html "2043: The year Britain will turn cashless"), SWOT was one of 15 missions listed by the National Research Council as projects NASA should undertake in the coming decade.

CLIMATE [TIPPING POINT](https://www.financedigest.com/are-we-at-a-digitise-or-die-tipping-point-in-the-telco-space.html "Are we at a ‘digitise or die’ tipping point in the telco space?")?

One major thrust of the mission is to explore how oceans absorb atmospheric heat and carbon dioxide, in a process that [naturally regulates global](https://www.financedigest.com/u-n-summit-aims-for-global-pact-to-protect-nature.html "U.N. summit aims for global pact to protect nature") temperatures and has helped to minimize climate change.

Oceans have [absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat trapped in Earth’s atmosphere by human-caused greenhouse gas](https://www.financedigest.com/demand-for-automotive-gas-charged-shock-absorbers-market-to-be-fuelled-by-rapid-shift-in-consumer-perception-and-increasing-awareness.html "Demand for Automotive Gas Charged Shock Absorbers Market to be Fuelled by Rapid Shift in Consumer Perception and Increasing Awareness") emissions, scientists estimate.

Scanning the seas from orbit, SWOT will be able to measure [fine differences in surface elevations around the smaller](https://www.financedigest.com/ericssons-provision-for-u-s-probe-hints-of-smaller-fine-shares-jump.html "Ericsson’s provision for U.S. probe hints of smaller fine, shares jump") currents and eddies where much the oceans’ drawdown of heat and carbon is believed to occur.

Understanding that mechanism will help answer a pivotal question – what is the tipping point at which oceans start releasing, rather than absorbing, large amounts of heat back to the atmosphere, thus intensifying [global warming instead of limiting](https://www.financedigest.com/credit-suisse-54-billion-lifeline-offers-limited-respite-to-global-banks.html "Credit Suisse billion lifeline offers limited respite to global banks") it.

SWOT’s ability to discern far smaller surface features over much wider areas than previous satellites also will help [study the impacts](https://www.financedigest.com/first-listener-wide-study-reveals-brand-impact-of-radio-livestream-and-podcasts.html "First listener-wide study reveals brand impact of Radio, Livestream, and Podcasts") of rising ocean levels on coastal areas.

Freshwater bodies are another key focus of SWOT, equipped to observe the entire length of nearly all rivers wider than 330 feet (100 meters), as well as more than 1 million lakes and reservoirs larger than a few New [York City](https://www.financedigest.com/codex-raises-over-190000-usd-at-live-charity-auction-at-ethereal-summit-in-new-york-city.html "Codex Raises Over 0,000 USD at Live Charity Auction at Ethereal Summit in New York City") blocks.

Taking inventory of Earth’s water resources repeatedly over SWOT’s three-year mission will enable [researchers to better trace fluctuations in the planet’s rivers and lakes during seasonal changes](https://www.financedigest.com/deloitte-research-reveals-inaction-on-climate-change-could-cost-the-worlds-economy-us178-trillion-by-2070.html "Deloitte research reveals inaction on climate change could cost the world’s economy US8 trillion by 2070") and major weather events.

SWOT’s radar instrument operates at the Ka-band frequency of the microwave spectrum, [allowing its scans to penetrate cloud](https://www.financedigest.com/the-fca-allows-financial-services-firms-to-use-the-cloud-but-why-should-they-adopt-it.html "The FCA allows financial services firms to use the cloud – but why should they adopt it?") cover and darkness and map observations in two dimensions.

Previous studies of water bodies relied on [data taken at specific](https://www.financedigest.com/who-urges-china-to-share-specific-data-regularly-on-covid-situation.html "WHO urges China to share specific data regularly on COVID situation") points or from satellites that could only track measurements along a one-dimensional line.

The satellite is [expected to begin producing research](https://www.financedigest.com/laser-plastic-welding-market-is-expected-to-reach-us-1-5-bn-by-2025-transparency-market-research.html "Laser Plastic Welding Market Is Expected To Reach ~US$ 1.5 Bn by 2025: Transparency Market Research") data within months.
