_By_ **_David Johnson,_** _Director of Strategic Architecture EMEA at Domo, explains why organisations are adopting a hybrid-cloud strategy, and the cost optimisation this presents._

Over the past 10 years or so, the cloud has been truly tried and tested. Companies spanning all sectors are making use of the cloud to help drive their business solutions, even those who once felt skeptical about its stability.

The hybrid-cloud [model gives](https://www.financedigest.com/can-artificial-intelligence-give-the-mvno-business-model-wings.html "Can Artificial Intelligence Give the MVNO Business Model Wings? ") companies flexibility, allowing for some solutions to be stored within on-premise servers, and others to be kept in the cloud. This [strategy can therefore suit a wide range of businesses](https://www.financedigest.com/small-business-strategies-for-foreign-exchange.html "Small business strategies for foreign exchange"), whether more traditional, or unconventional.

**What are the overall business benefits to** [adopting a hybrid-cloud strategy?](https://www.financedigest.com/high-quality-low-voltage-motors-market-recent-industry-developments-and-growth-strategies-adopted-by-players.html "High Quality Low Voltage Motors Market: Recent Industry Developments and Growth Strategies Adopted by Players")

There are two angles to dissect here: hybrid-cloud strategy vs. multi-cloud strategy, or some combination of the two. We’ve seen a persistent emergence from CDO and CTO [meetings recently about both strategies](https://www.financedigest.com/new-zealand-pm-meets-biden-to-discuss-u-s-indo-pacific-strategy.html "New Zealand PM meets Biden to discuss U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy"), and an overarching merger of the two where data and applications can reside in multiple public clouds as well as private infrastructure.

The multi-cloud [strategy comes](https://www.financedigest.com/real-time-connect-nyc-where-adtech-leaders-come-together-to-redefine-data-strategies.html "Real-Time Connect (NYC): Where AdTech leaders come together to redefine data strategies") with a number of benefits, such as a hedge against vendor lock-in, flexibility and selection of best-of-breed applications for specialised tasks, as well as cost-optimisation.

What we are hearing about hybrid-cloud, specifically why to move from pure [public cloud](https://www.financedigest.com/the-new-fangled-normal-of-working-from-home-to-push-the-public-cloud-service-market.html "The “New-Fangled” Normal of “Working from Home” to Push the Public Cloud Service Market") to also running your own servers, is cost. There was massive migration from on-premise infrastructure to the public clouds, however in some cases, there has been a reversal where companies are repatriating workloads [back from public clouds to bring](https://www.financedigest.com/trump-charges-bring-new-york-zombie-case-back-to-life.html "Trump charges bring New York ‘zombie case’ back to life") down costs. For some, [intellectual property](https://www.financedigest.com/intellectual-property-in-the-age-of-industry-4-0.html "Intellectual property in the age of industry 4.0"), extreme data sensitivity, or data sovereignty could be an angle, but that concern seems to have largely subsided in recent years for most types of data.

One of the most important elements here is that the surrounding technology for orchestration, management, and creating a logical layer that abstracts public/private [cloud and physical data](https://www.financedigest.com/three-ways-the-data-cloud-can-keep-financial-services-competitive.html "Three Ways the Data Cloud Can Keep Financial Services Competitive") location, has improved by an order of magnitude. This is all abstracted from the end-user, and they don’t care where the data sits.

**How does the adoption of a hybrid-cloud strategy lead to** [cost optimization in business?](https://www.financedigest.com/green-initiatives-cut-self-storage-business-space-stations-energy-costs-by-75.html "Green initiatives cut self-storage business Space Station’s energy costs by 75%")

The total cost is often significantly cheaper than running everything on a [public cloud](https://www.financedigest.com/infinidat-announces-public-cloud-and-data-protection-product-lines.html "INFINIDAT Announces Public Cloud And Data Protection Product Lines") for scaled workloads. This includes everything from internal database administration, to talent management and provisioning hardware. There is also some merit to having provisioned hardware you can make unlimited use of, rather than [worrying about running up a public cloud bill](https://www.financedigest.com/44-of-uk-households-are-worried-theyll-have-to-foot-the-bill-for-net-zero.html "44% of UK Households are Worried They’ll Have to Foot the Bill for Net Zero") or burning credits. Interestingly, the message was the opposite a few years back. The right answer is [striking the correct balance](https://www.financedigest.com/how-finance-leaders-can-strike-the-balance-between-human-and-artificial-intelligence.html "How finance leaders can strike the balance between human and artificial intelligence").

In addition to this, the pandemic has introduced a new set of [challenges and opportunities](https://www.financedigest.com/molasses-market-a-study-combine-with-challenges-and-opportunities-forecast-by-2017-to-2025.html "Molasses Market: A Study Combine With Challenges And Opportunities, Forecast By 2017 To 2025") for recalibration in a lot of areas, for better and worse. We’ve seen more scrutiny [around costs and ways](https://www.financedigest.com/5-time-efficient-ways-to-travel-around-the-philippines.html "5 Time-Efficient Ways to Travel Around the Philippines") to rethink a data strategy that both increase performance and slashes costs. Data has always been a hugely important cornerstone for the [financial sector](https://www.financedigest.com/how-can-the-financial-sector-safely-use-the-iot.html "How can the financial sector safely use the IoT?"), but it’s now on a completely different scale. Almost every function of a company can now be quantified into [databases or analytics](https://www.financedigest.com/oracle-offers-its-mysql-heatwave-database-and-analytics-on-amazons-cloud.html "Oracle offers its MySQL HeatWave database and analytics on Amazon’s cloud"), offering businesses a magnifying glass into the habits or demands of their customers and operations.

It is this ‘live [analysis’ of the customer and their behaviours that allows even the larger enterprises to be able to adapt to the market](https://www.financedigest.com/dry-ice-market-2015-outlook-current-and-future-industry-landscape-analysis-2025.html "Dry Ice Market 2015 Outlook, Current and Future Industry Landscape Analysis 2025") not only at speed, but with reassurance that investment, whether it be into product or marketing, is being made in the right areas. The knock on effect of this use in modern BI is simply reacting to the market quicker than your competitors, not only gaining a potential financial advantage, but also driving improvement in the general [customer experience](https://www.financedigest.com/the-new-client-adviser-experience-in-the-age-of-the-customer.html "The New Client-Adviser Experience in the Age of the Customer"), which supports the uplift in new customers and the loyalty of existing ones.
