MELBOURNE (Reuters) -Shell Plc on Wednesday told workers at its Prelude floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility it would stop paying them as of Monday after they extended industrial action for two more weeks over a long-running wage dispute.

Shell last week began shutting down the 3.6 million tonne a year site off northwestern [Australia](https://www.financedigest.com/worldpay-heads-down-under-with-australia-licence.html) and told customers it would be unable to supply LNG cargoes for as long as the protected industrial action – work stoppages approved by Australia’s Fair Work Commission – continued. The action began on June 10.

The [global major](https://www.financedigest.com/how-to-best-protect-assets-following-major-global-shifts.html "How to Best Protect Assets Following Major Global Shifts") said on Wednesday it had tried to work around the stoppages by the Offshore [Alliance](https://www.financedigest.com/ospt-alliance-welcomes-cardtekas-full-member.html) and find other work for staff and contractors to ensure they would be paid, but that was no longer possible.

As a consequence, we will be resorting to [lock outs as the mechanism available](https://www.financedigest.com/lock-in-for-longer-with-3-year-tenancies-available-at-behere-hayes-behere-east-india.html "Lock in for longer with 3 year-tenancies available at be:here Hayes & be:here East India") under the Fair Work Act. Once the lock outs are in effect, people will no longer be paid if they are not mobilised to the facility,” a Shell spokesperson said.

Prelude is co-owned by Shell, Inpex, Korea Gas Corp (KOGAS) and a [subsidiary of Taiwan’s](https://www.financedigest.com/barclays-sets-up-taiwan-subsidiary-to-offer-brokerage-services.html "Barclays sets up Taiwan subsidiary, to offer brokerage services") state-run Chinese Petroleum Corp.

The extended shutdown will further disrupt the [LNG market with European buyers scrambling for cargoes to make up for lost Russian](https://www.financedigest.com/japan-insurers-to-maintain-cover-for-lng-vessels-in-russian-waters.html "Japan insurers to maintain cover for LNG vessels in Russian waters") supply, due to sanctions on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine that it calls a “special military operation.

Given that [Australia is Japan’s](https://www.financedigest.com/brazil-to-resume-visa-requirements-for-us-japan-australia-canada-sources.html "Brazil to resume visa requirements for US, Japan, Australia, Canada -sources") largest supplier and Korea’s second-largest supplier, any cargoes not delivered would add to the energy issues faced by these two countries, and indeed the rest of Asia,” research firm EnergyQuest said in a report last week.

The Offshore Alliance, which combines the Australian Workers’ Union and the Maritime Union of [Australia,](https://www.financedigest.com/worldpay-heads-down-under-with-australia-licence.html) said Shell had refused to bargain since workers [rejected the company’s latest offer](https://www.financedigest.com/copper-miner-teck-resources-rejects-glencores-22-5-billion-offer.html "Copper miner Teck Resources rejects Glencore’s .5 billion offer") nine days ago.

If Shell is actually serious about a lock-out, it will significantly [increase the chances of breakdown and endanger the safety of workers on site,” Australian Workers’ Union](https://www.financedigest.com/ita-airways-averts-strike-after-wage-increase-accord-with-unions.html "ITA Airways averts strike after wage increase accord with unions") National Secretary Daniel Walton said in a statement, adding that the company had been “stonewalling” the union for 19 months.

He did not [say what the unions](https://www.financedigest.com/amazon-will-not-cut-jobs-in-italy-unions-say-after-meeting.html "Amazon will not cut jobs in Italy, unions say after meeting") could do next.

The Offshore [Alliance is using a pay deal agreed](https://www.financedigest.com/nissan-and-renault-agree-to-overhaul-alliance-this-time-as-equals.html "Nissan and Renault agree to overhaul alliance, this time as equals") with Japan’s Inpex Corp in April as the benchmark for talks with other oil and gas majors, including Chevron Corp at its Wheatstone platform.

Inpex agreed to base [rates of pay](https://www.financedigest.com/beat-the-exchange-rate-and-buy-that-dream-holiday-home-by-paying-in-pounds.html "Beat the exchange rate and buy that dream holiday home – by paying in pounds! ") between A$125,000 and A$258,000 ($86,000 and $178,000) plus allowances, up from between A$92,000 and A$102,000.

With global [energy prices](https://www.financedigest.com/heavy-norwegian-gas-maintenance-adds-to-energy-price-pressure.html "Heavy Norwegian gas maintenance adds to energy price pressure") in a bull market, there is no better time than now for the Offshore [Alliance](https://www.financedigest.com/ospt-alliance-welcomes-cardtekas-full-member.html) to negotiate good EBAs (enterprise bargaining agreements) for our members,” the alliance said in a posting on its Facebook site, on its talks with Chevron.
