Lancashire Council was given £120,445,000 for 2015/16 to help maintain and repair [roads](https://www.financedigest.com/how-technology-is-improving-car-safety.html) in the area. The authority spent the most (£1,760) on Chapel Lane, despite Cottage Lane being the most complained about road. \[1\]

Potholes [cost UK drivers almost £684 million](https://www.financedigest.com/australias-westpac-flags-950-million-profit-hit-led-by-energy-exit-costs.html "Australia’s Westpac flags 0 million profit hit, led by energy exit costs") in car repairs annually, with one pothole compensation claim made every 17 minutes \[2\]. Many disgruntled drivers have taken to [social media](https://www.financedigest.com/how-to-use-social-media-platforms-to-successfully-scale-your-business.html "How to use social media platforms to successfully scale your business") sites to voice their complaints. \[3\]

English roads are so infamously bumpy that Japanese car manufacturer Honda had to build a four mile [testing track](https://www.financedigest.com/ferrari-enel-x-plan-solar-plant-near-fiorano-test-track.html "Ferrari, Enel X plan solar plant near Fiorano test track") that mimicked British roads to see if its cars were hardy enough to survive our tarmac.

In 2014/15, the UK government spent £4.6 billion on road maintenance, more than in any of the previous four years \[4\].

[Nearly £2.3 million was paid by the government in compensation to drivers whose cars](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-new-car-sales-up-by-nearly-a-quarter-in-october-smmt.html "UK new car sales up by nearly a quarter in October – SMMT") were damaged by pesky potholes in the past year. Ben Egleton from [UK Carline](http://www.ukcarline.co.uk/) regularly travels along Cottage Lane in Lancashire. “I always find this to be a troublesome start and end to my daily commute. The potholes have been dreadful. I’ve personally suffered a puncture on my [drive home](https://www.financedigest.com/feasibility-of-interoperability-to-drive-the-home-medical-equipment-market.html "Feasibility of interoperability to drive the Home Medical Equipment Market") this year and the two cars following suffered the same fate within twenty minutes.

“We were able to claim against the local council who until then were repeatedly refilling the patchwork of potholes. Thankfully they’ve recently resurfaced Cottage Lane and so it’s now a much safer road to use.”
