When it comes to comms, the pace of change is increasing and with a shift to remote working and study, the need to be flexible and fast is more important than ever. In 2015, BT [announced that its PSTN/ISDN lines](https://www.financedigest.com/infinidat-announces-public-cloud-and-data-protection-product-lines.html "INFINIDAT Announces Public Cloud And Data Protection Product Lines") will be turned off in 2025. Given the rapid evolution in the way we communicate, now is as good a [time as any to be prepared](https://www.financedigest.com/savers-investors-and-expats-now-is-the-time-to-prepare-for-a-hard-brexit.html "Savers, investors and expats: Now is the time to prepare for a hard Brexit ") for this.

The decision to switch off has been made largely due to both technologies becoming outdated and unable to handle the volume, speed and quality of data in today’s increasingly [digital world](https://www.financedigest.com/fintechs-support-of-ukraines-digital-businesses-can-be-used-as-blueprint-across-the-world.html "Fintech’s support of Ukraine’s digital businesses can be used as blueprint across the world"). But what do you [need to know](https://www.financedigest.com/setting-up-a-business-in-the-uk-heres-what-you-need-to-know.html "Setting up a business in the UK? Here’s what you need to know."), and how can one prepare?

The good news is there are plenty of [ways to ensure your business](https://www.financedigest.com/3-ways-to-go-about-testing-your-business-ux-design.html "3 Ways to Go About Testing Your Business’ UX Design") can thrive both before the PSTN/ISDN switch-off and afterwards.

The PSTN supports a range of Openreach products which Communication Providers purchase at regulated pricing, [selling to businesses](https://www.financedigest.com/reasons-why-you-should-hire-a-business-broker-to-sell-your-business.html "Reasons Why You Should Hire a Business Broker to Sell Your Business") and consumers, constructing their line rental, broadband and call package deal.

ISDN is available in two common variants. Firstly, ISDN2 supports channels in pairs allowing you to have 2 ISDN to 8 ISDN channels. ISDN30 is [provided for larger business customers](https://www.financedigest.com/banks-can-provide-a-protective-shield-to-defend-customers-from-cyber-attack.html "Banks can provide a protective shield to defend customers from cyber attack") usually, with options to have between 8 ISDN channels and 30 ISDN channels per service. A single ISDN channel provides [customers with one concurrent call](https://www.financedigest.com/what-are-the-main-challenges-related-to-banks-processing-customer-calls.html "What are the main challenges related to banks processing customer calls? ") at a time.

**Voice Over Internet Protocol**

Fortunately, there a number of alternatives to PSTN/ISDN that have become established in recent years, and will enable [business operations to continue virtually](https://www.financedigest.com/despite-return-to-work-virtual-meetings-will-continue-to-disrupt-business-as-usual-in-finance.html "Despite Return to Work, Virtual Meetings Will Continue to Disrupt Business as Usual in Finance") uninterrupted after the switch-off. One of these is Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

VoIP allows low-cost telephone calls to be made anywhere through the internet, [replacing the need](https://www.financedigest.com/firms-need-to-prepare-for-eonia-and-euribor-replacement-now.html "Firms Need to Prepare for Eonia and Euribor Replacement Now") for a landline connection. When speaking into a VoIP-enabled telephone, your voice is converted into [data which is transmitted over the internet](https://www.financedigest.com/internet-data-growth-has-not-pushed-up-telcos-network-costs-dutch-government-says.html "Internet data growth has not pushed up telcos’ network costs, Dutch government says"). Then, on the receiving end of your call, this data is converted back into voice, [enabling easy and clear communication](https://www.financedigest.com/premium-credit-enables-rich-customer-communications-management-with-opentext.html "Premium Credit enables rich customer communications management with OpenText").

Any VoIP problems can be resolved remotely and efficiently, meaning that there’s no [need to shut down operations or call](https://www.financedigest.com/europe-power-firms-need-1-5-trillion-euros-in-margin-calls-equinor-says.html "Europe power firms need 1.5 trillion euros in margin calls, Equinor says") in an engineer. This minimises downtime and ensures consistency in [business operations](https://www.financedigest.com/synapse-appoints-new-finance-and-operations-manager-to-support-the-rapid-growth-of-the-business.html "Synapse appoints new Finance and Operations Manager to support the rapid growth of the business").

**Session Initiation Protocol**

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is another protocol that will help [businesses manage](https://www.financedigest.com/5-practical-ways-to-manage-your-business-expenses.html "5 Practical Ways To Manage Your Business Expenses") the transition away from ISDN. SIP is used to signal and control [interactive communication](https://www.financedigest.com/these-top-5-interactive-skills-will-ensure-well-become-better-communicators-in-2021.html "These top 5 interactive skills will ensure we’ll become better communicators in 2021") sessions. Examples of session use include voice, video, chat, and [instant messaging](https://www.financedigest.com/financial-services-risk-data-security-breaches-insecure-instant-messaging.html "Financial services risk data security breaches with insecure instant messaging"). The SIP protocol is used in many areas, such as [providing VoIP and instant](https://www.financedigest.com/nets-delivers-instant-p2p-payments-in-partnership-with-norways-leading-mobile-wallet-provider-vipps.html "Nets delivers instant P2P payments in partnership with Norway’s leading mobile wallet provider, Vipps") messaging capabilities, and other applications including 3G telephony.

In comparison to ISDN, SIP is cheaper on a per-channel basis and [provides higher flexibility in terms of the range](https://www.financedigest.com/patsnap-launches-playbooks-a-cloud-based-range-of-analysis-tools-to-provide-ip-insight-for-rd-teams.html "PatSnap launches Playbooks: A cloud-based range of analysis tools to provide IP insight for R&D teams") of telephone numbers you can have, and where you can have them. It is quicker to install and offers a robust [business continuity service ensuring your business never loses calls](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-businesses-call-for-looser-immigration-rules-to-boost-growth.html "UK businesses call for looser immigration rules to boost growth").

Ultimately, your [calls can now be made and received using solely your internet connection](https://www.financedigest.com/international-law-firm-calls-in-viato-connect-uk-and-us-offices.html "INTERNATIONAL LAW FIRM CALLS IN VIATO CONNECT UK AND US OFFICES") if you have a phone system that uses internet protocol (IP), such as VoIP or SIP. All of this can also be done in the [cloud by hosting](https://www.financedigest.com/host-analytics-summer17-takes-cloud-epm-to-new-heights-helps-finance-teams-maximize-corporate-performance.html "Host Analytics Summer17 Takes Cloud EPM to New Heights, Helps Finance Teams Maximize Corporate Performance") your phone system remotely.

**End-to-end capabilities are the way to go**

Organisations must [adopt end-to-end solutions](https://www.financedigest.com/quest-gains-momentum-as-growth-of-devops-open-source-and-hybrid-database-environments-fuels-adoption-of-modern-database-management-solutions.html "Quest Gains Momentum as Growth of DevOps, Open Source and Hybrid Database Environments Fuels Adoption of Modern Database Management Solutions") to best deal with the PSTN/ISDN switch-off. Fortunately, there are plenty of options available that will ensure greater flexibility, higher resiliency and improved [customer and employee experience](https://www.financedigest.com/the-new-client-adviser-experience-in-the-age-of-the-customer.html "The New Client-Adviser Experience in the Age of the Customer"). VoIP and SIP are very much ready to fill the void in this respect.

The age of fixed landlines is coming to an end, and 2025 is very much on the horizon.  This means the time is now for [organisations to evolve and embrace](https://www.financedigest.com/embracing-cloud-computing-how-and-why-organisations-are-set-to-invest-more-in-cloud-computing-in-2023.html "Embracing Cloud Computing: How and why organisations are set to invest more in cloud computing in 2023") alternatives to PSTN/ISDN. Those that [embrace this new chapter in the telecommunications industry](https://www.financedigest.com/driverless-cars-are-an-opportunity-which-the-insurance-industry-needs-to-embrace.html "Driverless cars are an opportunity which the insurance industry needs to embrace.") are the ones that will thrive.
