Feeling ostracised by family members has a negative effect on employee creativity, more so than feeling ostracised at work, finds new research from Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Business.

Feeling ignored or excluded by family members is more prevalent than imagined – past research reveals around 60% of individuals report being ostracised by their partners. Given the increase in working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, research into the impact of family and home experiences on employees is vital.

Associate Professor Mayowa Babalola and colleagues investigated what happens when [employees feel alienated by loved ones at home](https://www.financedigest.com/voice-quality-matters-quarter-of-employees-working-from-home-still-experiencing-regular-connectivity-issues.html "Voice Quality Matters: Quarter of Employees Working From Home Still Experiencing Regular Connectivity Issues"). Participants were all married and from various professions that required creativity, including advertising, [sales and marketing](https://www.financedigest.com/sales-of-electric-bicycle-motors-market-to-record-exponential-growth-during-2017-2025.html "Sales of Electric Bicycle Motors Market to Record Exponential Growth During 2017 – 2025"), consulting, IT, engineering, finance, and healthcare.

They collected [data on the participants’ need](https://www.financedigest.com/three-reasons-finance-professionals-need-get-grips-big-data.html "Three reasons why finance professionals need to get to grips with big data") for affiliation, perceived family ostracism, strain-based family-to-work conflict (strain in the family that interferes with work responsibilities), and creative process engagement. Finally, supervisors evaluated their employees’ creativity.

The study found that feeling excluded by family [creates stress which the individual](https://www.financedigest.com/digital-identities-creating-value-for-individuals-and-industries.html "Digital Identities: Creating Value for Individuals and Industries") then takes to work. This results in lower creative [process engagement](https://www.financedigest.com/sdl-helps-lifeplus-engage-with-customers-across-50-countries-and-gain-control-of-translation-costs-and-processes.html "SDL Helps Lifeplus Engage with Customers across 50 Countries and Gain Control of Translation Costs and Processes"), which ultimately inhibits creativity. [Employees with a greater need](https://www.financedigest.com/5-key-things-you-need-to-know-before-hiring-your-first-employee.html "5 Key Things You Need to Know Before Hiring Your First Employee") for affiliation at home were more susceptible to these negative effects. Their results also showed that the [impact of family ostracism on creativity is more significant than the impact of workplace](https://www.financedigest.com/how-gender-impacts-workplace-happiness.html "How Gender Impacts Workplace Happiness") ostracism.

Professor Babalola says,

_“Employee creativity is central to the [success](https://www.financedigest.com/neyber-brings-on-board-james-malia-to-leadership-team-to-support-employers-success-in-driving-employee-financial-resilience-goals.html "Neyber brings on board James Malia to leadership team to support employers’ success in driving employee financial resilience goals"), growth, and survival of organisations. Leaders can [play a crucial role](https://www.financedigest.com/why-the-bank-branch-still-has-a-role-to-play-for-consumers.html "Why the bank branch still has a role to play for consumers") in stimulating creativity in their employees, but its development can be limited by the effects of family ostracism, so they should encourage awareness of the effects of family-related issues on creativity and develop initiatives to help individuals deal with family-based stressors. Possible approaches include [developing employee](https://www.financedigest.com/3-impactful-ways-that-leaders-can-contribute-to-the-independent-development-of-their-employees.html "3 Impactful Ways that Leaders Can Contribute to the Independent Development of Their Employees") mindfulness and psychological capital, and building a supportive work climate.”_

These findings show that negative experiences at [home can be part of the environment that affects](https://www.financedigest.com/home-equity-release-how-to-get-the-best-valuation-and-what-factors-can-affect-it.html "Home Equity Release: How to Get the Best Valuation and What Factors Can Affect it?") employee creativity and those excluded and ignored by their families are more negatively affected than those experiencing the same from colleagues. Therefore, organisations should help [employees cope with both work and family-related stressors and support](https://www.financedigest.com/5-ways-to-support-your-employees-during-the-cost-of-living-crisis.html "5 ways to support your employees during the cost of living crisis ") them in dealing with negative interpersonal relationships.

These findings were published in the _Journal of Organizational Behaviour_.
