**Gordon McKenzie**, Managing Director EMEA, [Ondot](http://www.ondotsystems.com)

The past 12 months have been another momentous period in the digital payments landscape. Fintech innovation is starting to make an impact on the lives of consumers and small businesses, and new European banking rules will open the door to new players we’ve never seen before in the sector. As we enter 2019, disruption, innovation and growth in digital payments and banking will continue apace.

With consumers and business [users demanding](https://www.financedigest.com/sodium-tetraborate-market-key-players-end-user-demand-and-consumption-by-2030.html "Sodium Tetraborate Market Key Players, End User, Demand and Consumption by 2030") self-service, mobile-first solutions, only banks committed to solving genuine customer pain points will succeed amidst growing competition from disruptive challengers.

**Cards come alive through App Augmentation**

Gordon McKenzie

Over the past year a remarkable story has started to emerge around the evolving possibilities of the humble [payment card](https://www.financedigest.com/fingerprints-supports-two-more-biometric-payment-card-launches-in-the-mena-region.html "FINGERPRINTS’ SUPPORTS TWO MORE BIOMETRIC PAYMENT CARD LAUNCHES IN THE MENA REGION"). For so long it’s been under-used as a simple piece of plastic for payments and ATM withdrawals — but now [digital innovation](https://www.financedigest.com/the-cellular-imaging-market-to-show-an-inclination-towards-digitized-innovation.html "The Cellular Imaging Market to show an inclination towards digitized innovation") has begun to unlock new opportunities for organisations. The growth of eWallets, driven by the major mobile ecosystem players Apple and Android, is making the [payment experience](https://www.financedigest.com/how-netflix-justeat-and-uber-raised-the-bar-for-the-payments-experience.html "How Netflix, JustEat and Uber raised the bar for the payments experience") even faster and simpler for consumers. That’s put a greater focus for financial institutions on seamless provisioning of cardsinto [digital wallets](https://www.financedigest.com/digital-wallets-bring-value-to-banks-and-retails.html "digital wallets").

Beyond mere payments, new App-powered capabilities exist to give consumers greater control over their cards. Institutions can [build greater trust](https://www.financedigest.com/epi-how-to-build-trust-and-adoption-among-consumers-and-merchants.html "EPI: How to build trust and adoption among consumers and merchants") into their cards by offering customers app-based solutions to switch their cards on and off;control where and how they’re used, such as by location, merchants, transactions types, and spend; and set up usage alerts.

**[Hitting back](https://www.financedigest.com/back-to-black-germanys-coal-power-plan-hits-hurdles.html "Back to black? Germany’s coal power plan hits hurdles") at fraud**

These same capabilities will increasingly be offered in 2019 to help mitigate growing fraud levels. The past few months have seen a spike not only in traditional card data breaches but also digital skimming from e-commerce sites using the infamous Magecart code, and [ATM “cashout” operations](https://www.reuters.com/article/cyber-heist-india/indias-cosmos-bank-loses-135-mln-in-cyber-attack-idUSL4N1V551G). The former means card details belonging to customers of well-established companies [like British Airways](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-45446529), [Ticketmaster](https://www.riskiq.com/blog/labs/magecart-ticketmaster-breach/) and US retailer Newegg could now be in the hands of fraudsters.

It’s a multi-billion pound problem, with one organisation [warning this year that](https://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/news/uk-id-fraud-hits-an-alltime-high/) identity fraud had hit an all-time high in the UK.

Traditionally the process of cancelling cards and waiting for a replacement only adds to customer frustration, especially if they have to do most of the running. Card control applications will increasingly offer a more user-friendly solution enabling cardholders to control where, when and how each of their cards is used. For example, a user of a potentially breached card might keep it switched “off” by default until they want to use it, or ensure it can only be used in a specific location.

Of course, the regulators behind [Open Banking](https://www.financedigest.com/open-finance-and-smart-ecosystems-wont-wait-for-banks.html "Open Finance and Smart Ecosystems Won’t Wait for Banks") and PSD2 are not only looking at increasing competition in financial services, but also at protecting customers from fraud. Through the current tabled legislation, regulators are asking financial institutions to demonstrate control over fraud [levels and rates](https://www.financedigest.com/ecbs-lagarde-raises-prospect-of-rate-hikes-beyond-neutral-level.html "ECB’s Lagarde raises prospect of rate hikes beyond neutral level"), and of solutions available, among the most obvious and promising, are card control applications.  As card [control usage become more prevalent in the market](https://www.financedigest.com/automatic-door-control-market-2022-outlook-current-and-future-industry-landscape-analysis-2026.html "Automatic Door Control Market 2022 Outlook, Current and Future Industry Landscape Analysis 2026"), we can expect the regulators both to look favourably on its use and to inform future regulations.

We’ve seen these capabilities being introduced by Barclays – the first high street bank to do so, but we can go much further.

**Engaging with the Consumer**

Parents could even control dependants’ spend and employers can set limits on employee spending.Location based tracking can help identify potential fraudulent activity. [Digital card creation means we can have cards and customers](https://www.financedigest.com/the-cervical-total-disc-replacement-market-to-grow-based-on-customized-digitization.html "The Cervical Total Disc Replacement Market to grow based on customized digitization") onboarded instantly. AI-powered services go even further, by cleansing and enriching merchant [data](https://www.financedigest.com/optable-announces-new-data-clean-room-capabilities.html "Optable Announces New Data Clean Room Capabilities") to help lenders eliminate customer confusion about transactions, reducing call centre calls and erroneous chargebacks.

Again using an App that knows the consumer’s location, preferences and also payment controls, merchants have a great [opportunity to offer](https://www.financedigest.com/surgical-equipment-market-high-trend-opportunities-offers-future-business-growth-by-2030.html "Surgical Equipment Market High Trend Opportunities Offers Future Business Growth by 2030") ‘instant promotions’ based upon the consumer’s preferences, be it combination of cash and loyalty, 3 for 2 offers or ‘bring a friend’ for dinner. We see many of these promoted online or in print, but moving them to an [app on a mobile](https://www.financedigest.com/the-growth-of-mobile-fintech-and-the-impact-for-mobile-app-marketers.html "The growth of mobile fintech and the impact for mobile app marketers") in real time allows for engagement at a very personal level.

**SMEs demand more**

The [coming year](https://www.financedigest.com/refrigerated-trailer-market-to-exhibit-increased-demand-in-the-coming-years.html "Refrigerated Trailer Market to Exhibit Increased Demand in the Coming Years") represents a watershed for the SME community. A recent report found that 59% of UK SMEs see current offerings as “one size fits all”, with little effort made to personalise according to their business needs. Elsewhere, 40% [business owners in some sectors said they saw little difference between consumer and small business services](https://www.financedigest.com/philanthropy-is-an-underrated-tool-for-growing-financial-services-businesses.html "Philanthropy Is an Underrated Tool for Growing Financial Services Businesses"), except for the extra costs they were forced to pay.

However, the story of SMEs being “overcharged and under-served” when it comes to [banking is starting to change](https://www.financedigest.com/climate-change-fight-a-core-duty-for-central-banks-ecbs-villeroy.html "Climate change fight a ‘core duty’ for central banks – ECB’s Villeroy"), thanks to disruptive fintech options. Given [small businesses](https://www.financedigest.com/best-small-business-loans-speaks-to-fundbox.html "Best Small Business Loans Speaks to Fundbox") represent 99% of all UK companies, there’s a huge opportunity for financial players prepared to listen to this segment of the business banking world. They want speedy onboarding, quick loans, self-serve, app-based alerts and control over cards, and much more.

**Serving the Underbanked and the Gig Economy**

It’s estimated that there are up to 8 million people in the UK without a [bank account and payment card](https://www.financedigest.com/can-banks-acquire-customers-with-biometric-payment-cards.html "Can banks acquire customers with biometric payment cards?"). Traditionally the high costs on credit scoring, onboarding and operating accounts for this sector have created barriers to entry. However the dramatic reduction in costs of core [banking platform using cloud technology](https://www.financedigest.com/transforming-the-retail-banking-ecosystem-its-all-about-technological-innovation.html "TRANSFORMING THE RETAIL BANKING ECOSYSTEM: IT’S ALL ABOUT TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION"), along with smart spending and budgeting apps creates a real opportunity to extend the coverage of the e-payments sector.  Recent reports suggested that up to 60% of the UK population have less than £500 to cope with a financial emergency – so the use of smarter spending tools is a key lever in managing monthly budgets. This is especially important for those who may be on irregular incomes, be it through Universal Credit or Gig workers – but still have regular outgoings. A long way from the Jam Jar on the mantelpiece but exactly the same concept. We can also extend this to socially responsible spending such as an App controlling [cards](https://www.financedigest.com/card-spending-in-uk-falls-below-pre-covid-average-ons.html "Card spending in UK falls below pre-COVID average – ONS") to be used for childcare or basic welfare services spend.

**[Opportunity for banking](https://www.financedigest.com/how-partnerships-between-fintech-start-ups-and-traditional-banks-herald-a-brave-new-world-of-opportunity.html "How partnerships between FinTech start-ups and traditional banks herald a brave new world of opportunity") giants**

Thereare a range of [challenger banks](https://www.theguardian.com/small-business-network/2016/dec/28/challenger-bank-entrepreneur-funding-startups) competing in this space to offer more innovative, customer-centric services. They’re competing for SMEs and consumers, and will get even more opportunities when PSD2 rules really start to kick in over the coming year. But that’s to ignore the vast majority of users still with the incumbents. For that reason, there’s just as much opportunity for [traditional financial institutions](https://www.financedigest.com/fiat-republic-the-specialist-baas-platform-that-bridges-the-gap-between-web3-and-traditional-banks-announces-it-has-become-an-electronic-money-institution-emi-in-the-uk.html "Fiat Republic, the specialist BaaS platform that bridges the gap between web3 and traditional banks, announces it has become an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) in the UK.") as we head into 2019.

According [to one expert](http://www.smefinanceforum.org/post/the-real-gap-between-banks-and-smes), the key is not just to outspend the challengers on new tech, but to spend it on the right solutions. That means taking [time to properlyunderstand what their customers](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-and-eu-reach-post-brexit-customs-deal-for-n-ireland-the-times.html "UK and EU reach post-Brexit customs deal for N.Ireland-The Times") really want: ie location-based services, self-service capabilities, fraud alerts and card controls. Then they’ll need to partner up with those leading the way in [tech innovation](https://www.financedigest.com/post-pandemic-tech-innovation-the-role-of-accelerators-and-5g-testbeds.html "Post pandemic tech innovation: The role of accelerators and 5G testbeds"), or try to develop these capabilities in-house. It’s all about [putting power](https://www.financedigest.com/analysis-nickel-meltdown-puts-spotlight-on-lmes-search-powers.html "Analysis-Nickel meltdown puts spotlight on LME’s search powers") back into the hands of consumers to self-serve. That means happier customers, less fraud and lower support [costs for the bank](https://www.financedigest.com/how-can-open-banking-help-smbs-navigate-the-cost-of-living-crisis.html "How can Open Banking help SMBs navigate the cost-of-living crisis? ").

Either way we’re in for another disruptive, innovation-fuelled [year in payments](https://www.financedigest.com/end-of-year-overview-of-the-payments-industry.html "End of year overview of the payments industry"). Hold on tight.
