# Over a third of Brits would be put off a property by the cars parked outside

School catchment areas and transport links often come high on the list of factors when choosing a property, but new research shows that over a third (36%) of us would be but put off renting or [buying a house](https://www.financedigest.com/buying-a-house-for-the-first-time.html "Buying a house for the first time") based on the cars on the street.

Car leasing expert UK Carline carried out a survey of 1,023 Brits to find out what [factors](https://www.financedigest.com/car-bulb-market-demand-supply-growth-factors-latest-rising-trend-and-forecast-to-2028.html "Car Bulb Market Demand, Supply, Growth Factors, Latest Rising Trend and Forecast to 2028") influence their opinion of an area and which [cars](https://www.financedigest.com/volvo-cars-sales-up-31-in-may.html) we associate with having good neighbours.

The results show one in four would be influenced by what cars were [parked](https://www.financedigest.com/car-sharing-industry-revs-up-with-wembley-park-residents-in-the-driving-seat.html "Car sharing industry revs up with Wembley Park residents in the driving seat") on the street – so much so that just over a third of people would be put off buying a property just by seeing a car they didn’t like the look of parked in the neighbourhood.

According to the poll, Mercedes-Benz owners make the best [neighbours,](https://www.financedigest.com/terraced-streets-most-neighbourly-places-to-live.html) with 43% [saying they would associate](https://www.financedigest.com/funds-from-electricity-levy-could-help-german-households-says-renewables-association.html "Funds from electricity levy could help German households, says renewables association") the manufacturer with good [neighbours.](https://www.financedigest.com/terraced-streets-most-neighbourly-places-to-live.html)

In fact, it would seem that luxury [German cars](https://www.financedigest.com/german-car-industry-baulks-at-supplier-demands-over-energy-hikes.html "German car industry baulks at supplier demands over energy hikes") were generally held in high regard with British people, as Audi and BMW ranked second and third respectively.

**Top 5 cars associated with having ‘good neighbours’:**

1. Mercedes-Benz 43%
2. Audi 41%
3. BMW 40%
4. Jaguar 38%
5. Porsche 30%

However, it’s bad luck for Subaru owners, as the performance car [brand came top](https://www.financedigest.com/top-brands-for-women.html "Top brands for women") of the list as the one Brits would [associated](https://www.financedigest.com/digitized-escalation-to-drive-the-incontinence-associated-dermatitis-treatment-market.html) with having a bad neighbour.

And despite ranking well on the list of good neighbours, [German car brand BMW clearly](https://www.financedigest.com/german-inflation-eased-in-november-but-too-soon-for-all-clear.html "German inflation eased in November but too soon for ‘all-clear’") polarises opinion, with owners also ranking third for those perceived as undesirable to live alongside.

**Top 5 cars associated with having ‘bad neighbours’:**

1. Subaru 15%
2. Fiat 14%
3. BMW 12%
4. Ford 11%
5. Vauxhall 10%

As well as cars parked on the street, other factors which affected people’s opinions of an area were rubbish bins overflowing on the street (70%) or groups of teenagers hanging around the area (68%).

“Perhaps the Subaru has a stereotype of being driven by a boy racer, whereas it’s no surprise to [see the big](https://www.financedigest.com/bae-systems-sees-big-opportunity-in-space-after-uk-satellite-bolt-on.html "BAE Systems sees big opportunity in space after UK satellite bolt-on") three German brands as the most preferred in our survey, led by the Mercedes-Benz.
