[Bright Data (formerly Luminati Networks)](https://brightdata.com/), a leading online data collection platform, has today released new research findings that underscore the importance of ESG considerations in investing and demonstrate the importance organizations place on environmental and social impact when doing business. The research, carried out by research provider Vanson Bourne, highlighted US survey respondents from within the finance, banking and insurance sectors who said that just over three-quarters (76%) of their organization’s investment decisions are impacted by ESG factors, whereas for UK respondents it’s 67%.

Traditionally, the finance sector has relied heavily on pure financial [data sets](https://www.financedigest.com/finalised-pan-european-data-protection-laws-set-the-new-standard-for-a-privacy-friendly-business-environment.html "Finalised Pan-European data protection laws set the new standard for a ‘privacy-friendly’ business environment"), but research has shown the increase in awareness around ESG considerations. This is [powered by ESG data sets](https://www.financedigest.com/negotiating-our-future-youth-set-to-grab-power-roles-at-cop27.html "‘Negotiating our future’: Youth set to grab power roles at COP27"), a form of alternative/external data, and includes measurable metrics from areas such as energy use, emissions, harassment and discrimination lawsuits, board diversity, social involvement, or involvement in worthy causes.

The findings ranked the most pressing [ESG considerations and found environmental practices](https://www.financedigest.com/preventing-poor-esg-practices-from-costing-you-investors.html "Preventing poor ESG practices from costing you investors") (69%), organizational diversity (64%), and corporate governance (64%) as the most important considerations for 100 CDOs (Chief Data Scientists), CTOs, Heads of Data, CIOs and those who report to them. In addition to impacting investment decisions, ESG [performance was also reviewed for business](https://www.financedigest.com/big-data-lowers-insurance-premiums-and-optimises-business-performance.html "Big Data Lowers Insurance Premiums and Optimises Business Performance") partnerships, with 95% of survey respondents in the US and UK saying that their respective organizations take the ESG performance of its suppliers/vendors into account.

[Data is undoubtedly the lifeblood of business, and publicly available web-based data is being collected to generate insights surrounding ESG](https://www.financedigest.com/how-green-are-your-investments-why-esg-data-integration-is-key-for-financial-services-firms.html "“How green are your investments?” – Why ESG data integration is key for financial services firms") performance. The use of [data](https://www.financedigest.com/data-analytics-scenario-planning-and-the-finance-department.html "Data analytics, scenario planning, and the finance department") is a key takeaway from the research as 100% of interviewed respondents from data departments stated that their organizations incorporate ESG data into all or some business strategy decisions.

**Further [key findings from the survey](https://www.financedigest.com/fiserv-survey-shows-digital-services-key-to-customer-loyalty.html "Fiserv Survey Shows Digital Services Key to Customer Loyalty") include:**

- 88% of survey respondents stated that they are part of organizations where measuring and reporting on ESG performance is either a key [metric or of moderate importance to their business](https://www.financedigest.com/5-fx-metrics-your-business-should-be-tracking.html "5 FX METRICS YOUR BUSINESS SHOULD BE TRACKING").
- 66% of [survey respondents who are at the most senior level](https://www.financedigest.com/optimism-levels-drop-to-low-of-17-percent-according-to-first-survey-since-banking-regulations.html "Optimism levels drop to low of -17 percent, according to first survey since banking regulations") of their organizations stated that ESG is a key metric in their organizations, compared to just 40% of departmental and intermediate management.
- 80% of survey respondents who are at the most senior level of their organizations stated that [ESG is incorporated into all business](https://www.financedigest.com/esg-prepared-why-ignoring-esg-is-a-costly-business.html "ESG Prepared: Why Ignoring ESG is a Costly Business") strategy decisions, compared to 30% of departmental and intermediate management.
- Despite likely having fewer resources, 73% of survey respondents from organizations with 250-1000 [employees stated they would definitely change business](https://www.financedigest.com/why-investing-in-employee-health-can-be-good-for-business.html "Why investing in employee health can be good for business") practices that were found harmful to society, even if it did not make commercial sense to do so. This compares to only 60% of respondents from organizations with more than 1000 [employees who could say](https://www.financedigest.com/employers-and-the-government-should-support-employees-dependency-on-high-cost-credit-says-neyber.html "Employers and the Government should support employees’ dependency on high-cost credit, says Neyber") the same thing.
- ESG is a key metric for 68% of organizations with 250-1000 employees, but it’s only a key metric for 52% of organizations with more than 1000 employees.

“Not only are companies basing their own investment decisions on ESG factors, but investment, private equity and venture capital firms are increasingly factoring in ESG performance metrics from the companies they choose to invest in,” said Douglas Laney, Innovation Fellow, [West Monroe](https://www.westmonroe.com/). “Moreover, many companies are scrambling to determine how to source internal and external data to [generate trustworthy metrics and reporting](https://www.financedigest.com/harmonic-generators-market-projected-to-discern-stable-expansion-during-2021-2031-fact-mr-report.html "Harmonic Generators Market Projected to Discern Stable Expansion during 2021-2031: Fact.MR Report") required for the issuance of sustainability bonds,” Laney added.

This kind of information is mission-critical for those [companies looking to make prudent long-term investment](https://www.financedigest.com/invest-in-cryptocurrencies-commodities-or-companies.html "Invest in cryptocurrencies, commodities or companies?") decisions,” said Or Lenchner, CEO of Bright Data. “In today’s market, investors require the [full picture when making crucial investment](https://www.financedigest.com/sainsburys-pays-524-million-for-full-ownership-of-store-investment-vehicles.html "Sainsbury’s pays 4 million for full ownership of store investment vehicles") decisions and gaining insight from ESG-related data is now a key indicator. This has been made possible by the explosion of [alternative data](https://www.financedigest.com/investing-in-the-future-with-alternative-web-data.html "Investing in the future with alternative web data") – publicly available information released by or about organizations, online data included. [Investors are now using these data sets](https://www.financedigest.com/uks-most-liveable-city-manchester-sets-its-sights-on-the-world-from-tourists-to-property-investors.html "UK’s most liveable city, Manchester sets its sights on the world, from tourists to property investors") to form a clear picture of the market and create their strategy moving forwards. The gap between those that use ESG alternative [data to inform](https://www.financedigest.com/what-is-a-virtual-data-room-unveil-the-essential-information-here.html "What is a Virtual Data Room? Unveil the Essential Information Here!") decision-making and those who don’t is often vast, and this gap will continue to grow. This is especially true within the [investment sector](https://www.financedigest.com/invest-in-infrastructure-to-escape-the-starvation-cycle-warns-leading-nonprofit-sector-strategist.html "Invest In Infrastructure To Escape The ‘Starvation Cycle’, Warns Leading Nonprofit Sector Strategist"), and any organizations not using it run the risk of being left behind or making the wrong decision,” concluded Lenchner.
