# Marketmind: Purchasing managers of the world, diverge

A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Tom Westbrook

A month-long risky-asset rally, in the absence of any further banks collapsing, seems to be running out of steam as economic data offers few excuses for confidence.

Softening second-tier data in the U.S. on Thursday put a bid under [bonds for the first time in a few weeks](https://www.financedigest.com/shares-and-bonds-nervy-as-rate-hike-week-looms.html "Shares and bonds nervy as rate-hike week looms"), while bitcoin was clobbered. Purchasing manager’s index data are the next set of economic figures due as [market focus](https://www.financedigest.com/powder-dispenser-market-market-2019-2029-where-should-participant-focus-to-gain-maximum-roi.html "Powder Dispenser Market Market (2019 – 2029) | Where Should Participant Focus To Gain Maximum ROI ") flings back on growth.

British and [euro zone](https://www.financedigest.com/euro-zone-services-booming-but-sentiment-recovery-may-have-stalled-ecbs-lane.html "Euro zone services booming but sentiment recovery may have stalled -ECB’s Lane") manufacturing surveys are seen stuck in contraction territory.

China posted stonking [export growth](https://www.financedigest.com/russias-rosatom-sees-2022-exports-growth-at-15-report.html "Russia’s Rosatom sees 2022 exports growth at 15% – report") in March, but surprised analysts think that’s a one-off. [Chinese manufacturing](https://www.financedigest.com/leeds-based-flooring-retailer-announces-merger-with-chinese-manufacturer-to-expand-global-footprint-and-accelerate-growth.html "Leeds-Based Flooring Retailer Announces Merger With Chinese Manufacturer To Expand Global Footprint And Accelerate Growth"), which can be a leading indicator for Europe and elsewhere, is slowing.

Export orders out of tech bellwether Taiwan have nose-dived.

It’s a different story on the services side, where robust readings have been taken as signs of strong demand, inflationary pressure and another reason to take interest [rates higher](https://www.financedigest.com/credit-suisse-offers-higher-deposit-rates-in-asia-to-woo-the-wealthy-sources.html "Credit Suisse offers higher deposit rates in Asia to woo the wealthy – sources").

[European and British services PMIs are seen steady](https://www.financedigest.com/european-bourses-steady-as-focus-remains-on-key-economic-data.html "European bourses steady as focus remains on key economic data") and staying in expansion mode. British [retail sales](https://www.financedigest.com/italy-inflation-adjusted-retail-sales-fell-in-2022.html "Italy inflation-adjusted retail sales fell in 2022") are expected to fall, adding up to a somewhat confounding picture.

Asian markets were in caution mode through Friday, and MSCI’s Asia ex-Japan index [headed for its worst week since](https://www.financedigest.com/dollar-heads-for-first-weekly-gain-since-february.html "Dollar heads for first weekly gain since February") Silicon Valley Bank failed six weeks ago.

Japan itself is looking interesting, with the Nikkei an outlier and hitting an eight-month high as it rides a wave of investor hopes that the [world’s third-biggest stock market](https://www.financedigest.com/world-stocks-slip-as-markets-await-u-s-midterms-outcome.html "World stocks slip as markets await U.S. midterms outcome") might be in the process of awakening from decades of slumber.

Japanese core [inflation also hit its highest since](https://www.financedigest.com/russian-inflation-accelerates-to-7-61-m-m-in-march-highest-since-1999.html "Russian inflation accelerates to 7.61% m/m in March, highest since 1999") 1981 and has pressure on the central bank to pare back its ultra easy policies. The Bank of Japan meets [next week](https://www.financedigest.com/hungary-cenbank-seen-hiking-100-bps-to-11-75-next-week-as-inflation-surges.html "Hungary cenbank seen hiking 100 bps to 11.75% next week as inflation surges").

Data: Eurozone, UK and U.S. PMIs, British [retail sales](https://www.financedigest.com/russian-retail-sales-fall-deeper-jobless-rate-rises-in-sept-data.html "Russian retail sales fall deeper, jobless rate rises in Sept – data")

Speakers: Fed’s Cook, ECB’s de Guindos

Earnings: Proctor and Gamble, Regions Financial, Schlumberger
