Any internet marketing strategy is going to point users to your website.  Over the last 5 years we’ve seen how important it is to have a mobile-friendly website that anyone can access while on the go.  Now it’s [really important](https://www.financedigest.com/what-is-guest-post-placement-why-it-is-really-important.html "What is Guest Post Placement? Why it is really important?") to have a mobile-optimised website too.

**Mobile friendly vs mobile optimisation**

A mobile-friendly website is one that works on a [mobile device](https://www.financedigest.com/emvco-streamlines-approval-process-for-mobile-payment-devices.html "EMVCo Streamlines Approval Process for Mobile Payment Devices") – usually a smartphone.  If you can [view the content and the key](https://www.financedigest.com/publishers-and-brands-view-commerce-content-as-a-key-revenue-driver.html "Publishers and Brands View Commerce Content as a Key Revenue Driver") calls to action on an iPhone or Android phone, then the site is working.

A mobile-optimised website is one that [works really well on mobile](https://www.financedigest.com/why-firms-should-adopt-a-more-mobile-policy-at-work.html "Why firms should adopt a more mobile policy at work") – an A rather than a C+.

If you think about your browsing habits, you’ll be using your [mobile a lot to look up the things you want to buy](https://www.financedigest.com/sony-to-buy-mobile-game-developer-in-push-beyond-consoles.html "Sony to buy mobile game developer in push beyond consoles") and the

[companies you’d like to work](https://www.financedigest.com/alone-together-how-to-maintain-a-positive-company-culture-while-working-remotely.html "Alone together: How to maintain a positive company culture while working remotely") with.

Guess what?

Everyone else is doing that too.

**50% of traffic on** [mobile phones](https://www.financedigest.com/mobile-phone-insurance-brand-loveitcoverit-launches-in-ireland.html "Mobile phone insurance brand, loveitcoverit, launches in Ireland")

Dan Frydman, [Managing Director](https://www.financedigest.com/anya-libova-joins-apester-as-uk-managing-director.html "Anya Libova joins Apester as UK Managing Director") Inigo Media Ltd

Most [small business](https://www.financedigest.com/5-common-tax-mistakes-small-businesses-make-in-australia.html "5 Common Tax Mistakes Small Businesses Make in Australia") sites now get 50% or more of their website traffic from mobile phones.

There was a notable surge in 2020.

The [trend was growing](https://www.financedigest.com/global-animal-pregnancy-test-kits-market-2021-swot-analysis-drivers-restraints-growing-opportunities-latest-trends-applications-and-forecast-to-2028.html "Global Animal Pregnancy Test Kits Market 2021 SWOT Analysis, Drivers, Restraints, Growing Opportunities, Latest Trends, Applications And Forecast To 2028") anyway, with higher traffic sites already at or over 50%.  However, for [small businesses](https://www.financedigest.com/pakistan-floods-add-to-pain-for-struggling-small-businesses.html "Pakistan floods add to pain for struggling small businesses"), it’s been a big shift.  People are away from a computer, sharing our laptops with our kids, so we move to our phones to [buy online](https://www.financedigest.com/introducing-the-uks-first-entirely-online-used-car-buying-service-with-competitive-finance-option.html "Introducing the UK’s first entirely online used car buying service with competitive finance option").

It has become increasingly [important to consider](https://www.financedigest.com/4-important-factors-to-consider-when-choosing-an-eb-5-visa-investment-project.html "4 Important Factors to Consider When Choosing an EB-5 Visa Investment Project") mobile optimisation. None of us likes slow loading, hard to navigate mobile sites that look terrible.

So why should we [expect our customers](https://www.financedigest.com/banking-from-anywhere-embracing-technology-to-exceed-customer-expectations.html "Banking from anywhere: embracing technology to exceed customer expectations") to behave in a different way, or give us the benefit of the doubt?

Fast, easy to navigate, [clear sites with engaging content](https://www.financedigest.com/new-ozone-study-demonstrates-clear-link-between-quality-of-attention-to-content-and-quality-of-attention-to-accompanying-ads.html "NEW OZONE STUDY DEMONSTRATES CLEAR LINK BETWEEN QUALITY OF ATTENTION TO CONTENT AND QUALITY OF ATTENTION TO ACCOMPANYING ADS") work as well on mobiles as they do on laptops.

Ignoring the 50% can [cost a business](https://www.financedigest.com/green-initiatives-cut-self-storage-business-space-stations-energy-costs-by-75.html "Green initiatives cut self-storage business Space Station’s energy costs by 75%") dear, particularly if product pages, basket and checkout processes are harder to use on mobile.

**Introducing Core Web Vitals**

In June 2021 Google is implementing its Core Web Vitals, to favour sites that are optimised for mobile.  This [means making pages quick to load and don’t put up lots](https://www.financedigest.com/why-fundraising-no-longer-means-kissing-a-lot-of-frogs.html "Why fundraising no longer means kissing a lot of frogs") of intrusive popups. Distracting items and pages that jiggle about as they load will be marked down by Google.

Slow, disruptive and jiggly will mean a loss of ranking.

Any business usually [grows organically](https://www.financedigest.com/the-outboard-engines-market-to-grow-based-on-organic-expansion.html "The Outboard Engines Market To Grow Based On Organic Expansion") over time, new plugins or elements have been added and it didn’t add up to a big issue on desktop. However, it’s a concern now.

Too many plugins – components that do [things on your website – end up being loaded with too many scripts on every](https://www.financedigest.com/three-things-every-payments-professional-needs-know-psd2.html "Three things every payments professional needs to know about PSD2") page. That’s something you need to deal. The goalposts are about to change quite significantly.

It’s not hard to deal with.

**Mobile optimisation for your website**

Here are some key steps to ask your [web company or web developer](https://www.financedigest.com/reasons-to-hire-a-web-developer-for-your-business-website.html "Reasons to Hire a Web Developer for Your Business Website") about.

**Selective plugin loading**

[Stop some plugins from being loaded into templates where they aren’t needed](https://www.financedigest.com/new-tricks-needed-to-stop-the-e45-billion-counterfeit-smartphone-market.html "New Tricks Needed to Stop the €45 Billion Counterfeit Smartphone Market"). E.g., maps and form components on a homepage.

**Rearrange script loading**

Tell some scripts to load after all the content rather than before – which makes the page readable by users – and Google – before page enhancements are loaded.

**Combining scripts and files**

The [calls to scripts and stylesheet files take up more processing](https://www.financedigest.com/what-are-the-main-challenges-related-to-banks-processing-customer-calls.html "What are the main challenges related to banks processing customer calls? ") time. You can make this more efficient by combining script files and style files, compressing the gaps in-between bits of code and making it more optimised.

**Loading in content when it’s needed** You can also load in content when it’s needed, such as image files that aren’t required at the top of the page when it loads.  Lazy loading helps with this.

**What if you need to rebuild?** You may [need to look at how some pages are built in order to get the most savings](https://www.financedigest.com/how-much-do-i-need-to-save-for-retirement.html "How much do I need to save for retirement?").  This may require combining pages together to get the best result.  This can work wonders for [search engine](https://www.financedigest.com/how-to-optimize-your-new-content-for-the-search-engines.html "How to Optimize Your New Content For the Search Engines") optimisation too as you create an authority page that provides more help for your users.

**Getting the fastest page speed score isn’t the most** [important thing](https://www.financedigest.com/the-importance-of-helping-customers-do-things-for-themselves.html "The importance of helping customers do things for themselves")

As a [business owner](https://www.financedigest.com/small-business-owners-are-highly-optimistic-about-2017.html "Small Business Owners Are Highly Optimistic About 2017 "), you’ll be tempted to go for the best page score that you can.  This [isn’t always](https://www.financedigest.com/fintech-at-risk-why-multi-factor-authentication-isnt-always-the-answer.html "FinTech At Risk: Why Multi-Factor Authentication Isn’t Always the Answer") the best approach.  Aim to get a score that’s a good balance of speed, usability and still allows you to inform your customer.  Getting the fastest possible score could gut your site of useful information.  Perfection isn’t required, there is scope for good enough.

**Actionable steps**

01. Recognise the problem – you [need a mobile optimised site](https://www.financedigest.com/5-reasons-why-e-commerce-sites-need-a-token-gateway.html "5 reasons why e-commerce sites need a token gateway") to retain (and increase) ranking
02. Ask your web company to help you – they’ll be happy to!
03. [Ensure you’re getting a solution that helps users and doesn’t](https://www.financedigest.com/how-to-ensure-your-new-business-doesnt-become-a-victim-of-covid-related-fraud.html "How to ensure your new business doesn’t become a victim of Covid-related fraud") just act as a sticking plaster
04. Use it as an [opportunity to think about how you use your mobile](https://www.financedigest.com/mobile-marketing-challenges-and-opportunities-over-the-festive-period-and-beyond.html "Mobile Marketing: challenges and opportunities over the festive period and beyond") to research companies or products
05. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – there are no silly questions
06. Benchmark where you’re at now – site speed, number of visitors, time on site, etc.,
07. [Set targets](https://www.financedigest.com/big-brands-set-to-miss-plastic-sustainability-targets.html "Big brands set to miss plastic sustainability targets") for where you’re going
08. Measure against both your benchmark and targets regularly
09. Adjust your targets to do better
10. Produce great content that people will want to read
