Research has revealed that nearly a third (27%) of Brits aspire to own a car with a new registration plate1. With 2018’s registration plates being released on the 1st March, personal loan provider, Hitachi Personal Finance, has collated a checklist of things to consider if you want to get the best price on a new car.

**Plan ahead**

When it [comes to budgeting for a new car](https://www.financedigest.com/being-aware-of-the-insurance-blind-spot-when-it-comes-to-driverless-cars.html "Being aware of the insurance blind spot when it comes to driverless cars"), it’s vital that you take all costs into consideration. It’s not just about how much the [car costs](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-car-output-rises-in-august-soaring-costs-cast-shadow-over-recovery.html "UK car output rises in August, soaring costs cast shadow over recovery") upfront, but also the additional expenses that come with vehicle ownership. How much will it [cost to tax and insure](https://www.financedigest.com/as-the-cost-of-living-bites-tackling-insurance-quote-manipulation-is-key.html "As the cost of living bites, tackling insurance quote manipulation is key")? Is it fuel-efficient or will it drain your bank balance long after the initial outlay? Take the [time to do some research before you buy](https://www.financedigest.com/buying-a-house-for-the-first-time.html "Buying a house for the first time"), as it’s no good getting a great upfront cost on a car that you then can’t afford to keep.

**Think long-term**

Most people have a [dream car](https://www.financedigest.com/so-you-have-the-dream-job-nice-car-and-big-house-but-is-your-lifestyle-sustainable-do-you-have-the-products-in-place-if-the-worst-were-to-happen.html "So you have the dream job, nice car and big house, but is your lifestyle sustainable? Do you have the products in place if the worst were to happen?") in mind, but choosing a car that’s going to hold its value will pay off in the long-run. Purchasing a [car for £10,000 instead of £12,000 may seem like a great deal](https://www.financedigest.com/exclusive-indian-car-makers-propose-tax-cut-on-imports-in-trade-deal-with-britain.html "Exclusive-Indian car makers propose tax cut on imports in trade deal with Britain"), but if it’s going to depreciate by 50% the minute you drive it out of the showroom, there may be a better option, so make sure you do your research.

**Check the warranty**

Most new cars come with some form of warranty as standard, but they can differ massively, and not just in terms of the timeframe the warranty covers. Take the time to make sure to know exactly what is and isn’t covered in your warranty and compare this against any other [cars you’re](https://www.financedigest.com/ten-things-youre-doing-that-are-invalidating-your-car-insurance.html "TEN THINGS YOU’RE DOING THAT ARE INVALIDATING YOUR CAR INSURANCE") interested in, to make sure you’re getting the best value.

**All about the timing**

The best time to go shopping for a brand-new [car is when sales](https://www.financedigest.com/uk-new-car-sales-rise-in-november-fail-to-zoom-past-2019-levels-smmt.html "UK new car sales rise in November, fail to zoom past 2019 levels- SMMT") people have targets to meet, for example at the end of the year, the financial year, or the quarter. Having this in mind when shopping for a new car could make it easier to negotiate a better price, or added extras.

**Always ask!**

It may sound obvious but if you don’t ask, you don’t get. When [spending such a big](https://www.financedigest.com/is-the-next-big-cyber-threat-mis-placed-security-spending.html "Is the next big cyber threat mis-placed security spending?") sum of money, bartering for a better price can seem daunting, but it may pay off to take the plunge and see what response you get!
