MILAN (Reuters) – Leading Italian insurer Generali is set to pull out of its operations in Russia following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, a source close to the situation said on Thursday.

Among a number of actions it will undertake, Generali will give up its seats on the board of one of Russia’s largest insurers Ingosstrakh, in which it holds a 38% stake, the source added.

The move comes as Western nations seek to distance themselves from Russian business after President Vladimir Putin ordered his troops into its neighbour.

Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy’s biggest bank, is conducting a strategic review of its presence in [Russia while helping staff in Ukraine](https://www.financedigest.com/analysis-action-wanes-at-u-n-to-isolate-russia-almost-six-months-into-ukraine-war.html "Analysis: Action wanes at U.N. to isolate Russia almost six months into Ukraine war") leave the country, a spokesperson said.

Intesa, which has 800 staff in Ukraine, said it was [providing assistance to its employees on the ground by offering](https://www.financedigest.com/ultimate-finance-provides-good-funding-offer-to-sig-customers.html "Ultimate Finance provides good funding offer to SIG customers") accommodation in the other countries where it operates.

In [central and eastern Europe](https://www.financedigest.com/analysis-runaway-prices-have-central-europe-on-the-ropes.html "Analysis-Runaway prices have central Europe on the ropes"), Intesa has subsidiaries also in Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

“We fully condemn what is happening,” the spokesperson said.

Intesa has financed major [investment projects](https://www.financedigest.com/sse-to-invest-122-million-in-scottish-pumped-hydro-project.html "SSE to invest 2 million in Scottish pumped hydro project") in Russia, such as the Blue Stream gas pipeline and the sale of a stake in oil producer Rosneft. It handles more than [half of all commercial transactions](https://www.financedigest.com/over-half-of-organisations-would-consider-using-cryptocurrencies-for-business-transactions-though-8-in-10-acknowledge-the-increased-risk-of-associated-ddos-attacks.html "Over half of organisations would consider using cryptocurrencies for business transactions, though 8 in 10 acknowledge the increased risk of associated DDoS attacks") between Italy and Russia.

Its [credit exposure to Russia was 5.57 billion euros](https://www.financedigest.com/telecoms-group-orange-signs-sustainability-linked-refinancing-of-6-billion-euros-syndicated-credit-facility.html "Telecoms group Orange signs sustainability-linked refinancing of 6 billion euros syndicated credit facility") at the end of 2021, or 1.1% of its total.

Intesa’s subsidiaries in Russia and Ukraine have assets of 1 billion euros and 300 [million](https://www.financedigest.com/amazon-grants-1-5-million-euros-to-dutch-seaweed-farm-project.html "Amazon grants 1.5 million euros to Dutch seaweed farm project") euros, respectively, which together represent just 0.1% of the group’s total assets.

A UniCredit spokesperson declined to comment on whether Italy’s second-biggest [bank could take similar action over its business](https://www.financedigest.com/credit-agricole-launches-china-ma-and-investment-banking-business.html "Credit Agricole launches China M&A and investment banking business") in Russia, where it runs the country’s 14th largest bank with around 4,000 staff.

UniCredit, whose exposure to Russia totals 14 billion euros, could easily absorb a full writeoff of its Russian [business given its ample capital](https://www.financedigest.com/frances-ynsect-to-refocus-bug-business-after-capital-increase.html "France’s Ynsect to refocus bug business after capital increase") reserves.

But that would still leave it with some 6 [billion euros](https://www.financedigest.com/mercedes-benz-to-buy-back-up-to-4-billion-euros-in-shares-by-2025.html "Mercedes-Benz to buy back up to 4 billion euros in shares by 2025") in cross-border exposure, including loans to large corporates.

A full write-off of its [Russian business](https://www.financedigest.com/pizza-firm-dp-eurasia-delivers-profit-rise-evaluating-russian-business.html "Pizza firm DP Eurasia delivers profit rise, evaluating Russian business") would cost UniCredit just over 1 billion euros, sources told Reuters on Wednesday, shaving 35 basis points off the bank’s highest-quality capital ratio.
