PARIS (Reuters) – President Emmanuel Macron has bestowed the Legion of Honour on [Ukraine’s](https://www.financedigest.com/france-says-belarus-could-face-more-sanctions-if-it-gets-increasingly-involved-in-ukraine-conflict.html) leader Volodymyr [Zelenskiy](https://www.financedigest.com/zelenskiy-calls-on-german-chancellor-to-visit-ukraine-on-may-9.html) during a visit to Paris.

It is the highest award a French president can give to a counterpart, the Elysee Palace said in an overnight statement.

“A salute to Ukraine and its people. A salute to you, dear Volodymyr, for your courage and commitment,” Macron wrote on [social media](https://www.financedigest.com/saudi-snitching-app-turns-citizens-into-social-media-police.html "Saudi snitching app turns citizens into social media police").

Zelenskiy told Macron and Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz late on Wednesday that they had the opportunity to be “game changers” in the [war against Russia by not hesitating in delivering heavy weapons](https://www.financedigest.com/why-data-is-the-best-weapon-in-the-war-for-digital-talent.html "Why data is the best weapon in the war for digital talent") and modern fighter jets to [Ukraine.](https://www.financedigest.com/france-says-belarus-could-face-more-sanctions-if-it-gets-increasingly-involved-in-ukraine-conflict.html)

A video posted by the Elysee presidential palace showed Macron handing the medal to [Zelenskiy,](https://www.financedigest.com/zelenskiy-calls-on-german-chancellor-to-visit-ukraine-on-may-9.html) dressed in his trademark khaki attire, in an opulent room. The two men [shared a warm embrace and held hands](https://www.financedigest.com/world-shares-rally-as-china-offers-markets-a-hand.html "World shares rally as China offers markets a hand") as Zelenskiy responded to Macron.
