# Ford asks U.S. salaried employees to disclose COVID-19 vaccination status

(Reuters) -Ford Motor Co on Tuesday became the second Detroit automaker to ask U.S. salaried employees to reveal their [vaccination status](https://www.financedigest.com/outcry-as-australia-bars-djokovic-over-vaccination-status.html "Outcry as Australia bars Djokovic over vaccination status") against COVID-19 in a bid to comply with wider federal guidelines.

Ford said salaried employees were required to submit their [vaccination status against COVID-19](https://www.financedigest.com/factbox-countries-making-covid-19-vaccines-mandatory-2.html "Factbox-Countries making COVID-19 vaccines mandatory") by Oct. 8 but the process was voluntary for its [hourly employees represented by the United Auto Workers](https://www.financedigest.com/finance-sector-workers-average-lunch-hour-just-37-minutes-how-can-the-office-change-this.html "Finance Sector Workers’ Average ‘Lunch Hour’ Just 37 Minutes – How Can The Office Change This?") (UAW) union.

The automaker’s move comes as the Biden administration pursues sweeping measures to increase vaccination coverage in the United States, while pushing large [employers to have their workers](https://www.financedigest.com/more-than-half-of-workers-are-open-to-leaving-their-current-employers.html "MORE THAN HALF OF WORKERS ARE OPEN TO LEAVING THEIR CURRENT EMPLOYERS") inoculated or tested weekly.

Separately, Chief Executive Jim Farley said in a CNBC interview that the [company’s leadership team was vaccinated against COVID-19 and that Ford was conducting a survey to know how many employees](https://www.financedigest.com/why-more-companies-are-asking-new-employees-to-commence-employment-before-christmas.html "Why more companies are asking new employees to commence employment BEFORE Christmas.") had been vaccinated.

When it comes to the larger population of Ford, we want people to get vaccinated,” Farley said, adding the [company would work](https://www.financedigest.com/alone-together-how-to-maintain-a-positive-company-culture-while-working-remotely.html "Alone together: How to maintain a positive company culture while working remotely") with UAW, which had so far resisted the effort to make vaccinations compulsory.

UAW represented about 58,000 hourly employees in the United States, as per the company’s latest annual filing.

Larger rival General Motors Co in August had asked for vaccination status of its [salaried employees](https://www.financedigest.com/a-first-look-at-new-york-citys-new-law-prohibiting-employers-from-inquiring-about-the-salary-history-of-applicants.html "A First Look at New York City’s New Law Prohibiting Employers From Inquiring About the Salary History of Applicants").

Farley, in the CNBC interview, also said the ongoing semiconductor chip [shortage would probably last through the end of next year](https://www.financedigest.com/eu-could-face-gas-shortage-next-year-iea-warns.html "EU could face gas shortage next year, IEA warns").

He said things were getting better but Ford was still unable to meet [demand for its vehicles](https://www.financedigest.com/adoption-of-autonomous-underwater-vehicles-market-to-surge-during-the-forecast-period-owing-to-increased-consumer-demand.html "Adoption of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Market to Surge During the Forecast Period Owing to Increased Consumer Demand").

We are improving our shipments to dealers now and our inventories are going very fast,” said Farley, who took over the automaker’s reins [last year](https://www.financedigest.com/most-uk-smes-spent-600-hours-over-the-last-year-preparing-for-new-gdpr-legislation.html "Most UK SMEs spent 600 hours over the last year preparing for new GDPR legislation").

Ford’s production was [hit in the second quarter due to a fire at a plant](https://www.financedigest.com/exclusive-foxconn-woes-could-hit-at-least-30-of-iphone-nov-shipments-from-china-plant-source.html "Exclusive: Foxconn woes could hit at least 30% of iPhone Nov shipments from China plant – source") owned by automobile chipmaker Renesas Electronics Corp in March. Farley said the facility was up to speed now.
