MILAN (Reuters) – Italy’s FinecoBank is seeing strong demand for fixed income products as rates rise, which should bolster its asset management business after net inflows roughly halved last year, its chief executive said.

CEO Alessandro Foti told Reuters cost control was key for the industry to cope with more challenging market conditions, adding Fineco’s costs would be only modestly affected by plans to open a UK subsidiary under a post-Brexit setup to continue operating in the country.

We’ve been using our European [banking licence](https://www.financedigest.com/dutch-online-bank-bunq-applies-for-u-s-banking-licence.html "Dutch online bank Bunq applies for U.S. banking licence") under a grace period … but we’re finalising arrangements with UK authorities. We’ll open a subsidiary and have some people there which will impact – modestly – our cost base. Nothing dramatic.”

Fineco, a digital bank which in 2018 launched an asset [management business](https://www.financedigest.com/four-reasons-whycloud-based-inventory-management-is-important-for-your-ecommerce-business.html "Four reasons whycloud-based inventory management is important for your ecommerce business") to complement its activity as a distributor of financial products, will report December inflows data on Tuesday.

Net inflows totalled 8.7 billion euros ($9.4 billion) in the first 11 months, not far from the 9.3 billion of a year earlier thanks to strong growth in assets under custody, which offset the [drop in more profitable](https://www.financedigest.com/ford-posts-lower-profit-issues-downbeat-outlook-shares-drop.html "Ford posts lower profit, issues downbeat outlook; shares drop") managed assets.

We are witnessing a strong return of interest from our clients in fixed income, and this is helping the recovery in [managed assets,”](https://www.financedigest.com/french-watchdog-fines-h2o-asset-management-executives-over-tennor-investments.html "French watchdog fines H2O Asset Management, executives over Tennor investments") Foti said.

Negative rates had [turned fixed](https://www.financedigest.com/certainty-in-an-uncertain-world-post-brexit-investors-turn-to-commercial-property-and-fixed-returns.html "Certainty in an uncertain world – post-Brexit investors turn to commercial property and fixed returns") income into a non-starter. Now, it’s appealing again as an [asset class.”](https://www.financedigest.com/camradata-announces-top-asset-class-searches-for-investors-in-march-2018.html "CAMRADATA announces top asset class searches for investors in March 2018")

Bonds have suffered one of their worst [years in history](https://www.financedigest.com/explainer-international-womens-day-date-history-and-this-years-theme.html "Explainer-International Women’s Day: date, history and this year’s theme") as central banks aggressively tightened monetary policy.

While rates are yet to peak, some investors [expect recession](https://www.financedigest.com/german-economy-expected-to-skirt-recession-economy-ministry-report.html "German economy expected to skirt recession – economy ministry report") in the United States and Europe to support fixed income and revive the classic “60/40” stock/bond portfolio allocation that BofA analysts in October said was facing the worst returns in 100 years as both bonds and equities slumped.

“The 60/40 allocation, which in continental Europe means 60% bonds and 40% equities, is becoming interesting once again,” Foti said.

He challenged some analysts’ concerns about the [cost-of-living crisis](https://www.financedigest.com/british-shoppers-defy-cost-of-living-crisis-at-christmas.html "British shoppers defy cost-of-living crisis at Christmas") driving a marked slowdown in the asset management sector’s expansion.

The inflows data we’re [seeing and that we’ll keep seeing confirm growth](https://www.financedigest.com/wto-sees-subpar-2023-trade-growth-with-multiple-risks.html "WTO sees “subpar” 2023 trade growth with multiple risks") in the industry remains vigorous,” he said, adding customers of firms such as Fineco – or rival Banca Mediolanum and Azimut – typically have higher income levels and are less vulnerable to inflation.

On Monday, Mediolanum reported 8.3 [billion euros](https://www.financedigest.com/telecoms-group-orange-signs-sustainability-linked-refinancing-of-6-billion-euros-syndicated-credit-facility.html "Telecoms group Orange signs sustainability-linked refinancing of 6 billion euros syndicated credit facility") in net inflows for 2022, versus 9.2 billion a year earlier.

Markets conditions are becoming more complex, and costs will [need closer watching to preserve margins](https://www.financedigest.com/europe-power-firms-need-1-5-trillion-euros-in-margin-calls-equinor-says.html "Europe power firms need 1.5 trillion euros in margin calls, Equinor says"), but this has been a tenet for Fineco even during the extraordinarily positive market phase we’ve experienced,” he added.

With a fifth of its staff working in IT, Fineco can more easily [fight cost inflation](https://www.financedigest.com/inflation-fighting-central-bankers-air-climate-role-doubts.html "Inflation fighting central bankers air climate role doubts") because it developed in-house its digital platform.
