LONDON – The Nord Stream 1 pipeline that transports Russian gas to Germany will undergo further maintenance, Gazprom said on Friday after scrapping a Saturday deadline to resume flows, deepening Europe’s difficulties in securing fuel.

Gazprom was already undergoing maintenance from Aug. 31-Sept. 2, prompting concerns about supply to [Europe ahead of the onset of winter](https://www.financedigest.com/europe-experienced-second-warmest-winter-on-record.html "Europe experienced second-warmest winter on record") if the outage was extended.

[Russia slashed flows through the pipeline to 40% of capacity](https://www.financedigest.com/russias-ochakovo-ups-soft-drink-bottling-capacity-as-western-rivals-leave.html "Russia’s Ochakovo ups soft drink bottling capacity as Western rivals leave") in June and to 20% in July.

It has also [cut off supply](https://www.financedigest.com/oil-gains-as-russian-supply-cuts-temper-concerns-over-rate-hikes-high-stocks.html "Oil gains as Russian supply cuts temper concerns over rate hikes, high stocks") to several European countries such as Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Poland, and reduced flows via other pipelines since launching what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

The following outlines Europe’s options.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN ROUTES FOR [RUSSIAN GAS TO EUROPE](https://www.financedigest.com/exclusive-europe-ready-for-baltics-emergency-switch-off-from-russian-grid.html "Exclusive: Europe ready for Baltics emergency switch-off from Russian grid")?

[Russia typically supplies](https://www.financedigest.com/exclusive-kazakh-mcdonalds-shut-outlets-temporarily-after-halting-supplies-from-russia-sources.html "Exclusive-Kazakh McDonald’s shut outlets temporarily after halting supplies from Russia – sources") about 40% of Europe’s natural gas, mostly by pipeline. Deliveries last year were around 155 billion cubic metres (bcm).

Via Ukraine the gas goes mainly to Austria, Italy, Slovakia and other [east European](https://www.financedigest.com/analysis-east-europeans-count-their-pennies-for-christmas-as-food-costs-soar.html "Analysis-East Europeans count their pennies for Christmas as food costs soar") states. The [Ukrainian transmission system operator](https://www.financedigest.com/grid-operator-urges-ukrainians-to-save-electricity-as-temperatures-drop.html "Grid operator urges Ukrainians to save electricity as temperatures drop") has declared force majeure at the Sokhranovka entry point pipeline that runs through Russian-occupied territory in the east of the country.

Ukraine’s state-owned energy company Naftogaz has said it is working to increase natural gas production, and could supply gas to European countries in time for [next year’s](https://www.financedigest.com/eu-could-face-gas-shortage-next-year-iea-warns.html "EU could face gas shortage next year, IEA warns") heating season.

European countries have been seeking to find alternative supply, including some cut off by Russia after [rejecting a demand they pay](https://www.financedigest.com/unicredit-shareholders-urged-to-reject-ceo-orcels-pay-rise.html "UniCredit shareholders urged to reject CEO Orcel’s pay rise") in roubles.

Others, including Germany, still need [Russian gas and are trying to refill gas storage](https://www.financedigest.com/analysis-russian-gas-flow-too-low-to-fill-europes-storage.html "Analysis – Russian gas flow too low to fill Europe’s storage") ahead of winter.

Alternative routes to Europe that do not go via Ukraine include the Yamal-Europe pipeline, which crosses Belarus and Poland to Germany.

The Yamal-Europe [pipeline has a 33 billion](https://www.financedigest.com/gsk-bets-2-billion-on-bellus-cough-drug-to-soothe-pipeline-fears.html "GSK bets billion on Bellus cough drug to soothe pipeline fears") cubic metre (bcm) capacity, around a sixth of Russian gas exports to Europe. Flows have been reversed to [flow eastward](https://www.financedigest.com/yamal-europe-eastward-gas-flows-resume-as-nord-stream-lays-idle.html "Yamal-Europe eastward gas flows resume as Nord Stream lays idle") between Poland and Germany since the start of this year.

Moscow has placed [sanctions on the owner of the Polish part of the Yamal-Europe pipeline](https://www.financedigest.com/russia-sanctions-european-gas-companies-polish-part-of-gas-pipeline.html "Russia sanctions European gas companies, Polish part of gas pipeline"). However, Poland can manage without reverse gas flow on the Yamal pipeline, its climate minister has said.

On [Nord Stream](https://www.financedigest.com/denmark-invites-nord-stream-operator-to-help-salvage-unidentified-object.html "Denmark invites Nord Stream operator to help salvage unidentified object") 1, the Kremlin has blamed Western sanctions for a delay in the return of equipment sent for maintenance to Canada.

EUROPE’S ALTERNATIVE SUPPLIERS?

Some [countries have alternative supply options and Europe’s](https://www.financedigest.com/best-countries-in-europe-to-live-in.html "Best countries in Europe to live in") gas network is linked up so supplies can be shared, although the global gas market was tight even before the Ukraine crisis.

Germany, Europe’s biggest consumer of Russian gas, which has halted certification of the new [Nord Stream](https://www.financedigest.com/new-intelligence-points-to-pro-ukraine-group-in-nord-stream-attack-nyt.html "New intelligence points to pro-Ukraine group in Nord Stream attack -NYT") 2 gas pipeline from Russia because of the Ukraine war, could import from Britain, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands via pipelines.

Norway, Europe’s second biggest gas supplier behind Russia, has been [raising production to help the European Union towards its target of ending](https://www.financedigest.com/boe-raises-rates-again-as-investors-look-towards-end-of-hikes.html "BoE raises rates again as investors look towards end of hikes") reliance on Russian fossil fuels by 2027.

Britain’s Centrica has signed a deal with Norway’s [Equinor for extra supply for the next three winters](https://www.financedigest.com/ceraweek-europe-gas-supplies-to-stay-tight-2-more-winters-equinor-ceo-says.html "CERAWEEK-Europe gas supplies to stay tight 2 more winters, Equinor CEO says"). Britain does not rely on [Russian gas and can also export to Europe via pipelines](https://www.financedigest.com/oil-edges-up-on-u-s-pipeline-restart-uncertainty-russian-supplies.html "Oil edges up on U.S. pipeline restart uncertainty, Russian supplies").

Southern Europe can receive Azeri gas via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline to Italy and the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) through Turkey.

The United States has said it can supply 15 bcm of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the European Union this year.

But U.S. LNG [plants are producing at full capacity and a blast at a major LNG export terminal in Texas will keep](https://www.financedigest.com/e-on-casts-doubt-on-german-plan-to-keep-nuclear-plants-on-standby.html "E.ON casts doubt on German plan to keep nuclear plants on standby") it idle until late November.

Europe’s LNG terminals also have limited capacity for extra imports, although some countries say they are [seeking ways to expand imports](https://www.financedigest.com/eu-seeks-deal-on-law-preventing-import-of-deforestation-linked-goods.html "EU seeks deal on law preventing import of deforestation-linked goods") and storage.

Germany is among those who want to build new [LNG terminals](https://www.financedigest.com/greece-bulgaria-say-new-lng-terminal-will-help-cut-reliance-on-russia.html "Greece, Bulgaria say new LNG terminal will help cut reliance on Russia"). It [plans to build](https://www.financedigest.com/best-guide-to-build-a-personal-financial-plan.html "Best Guide to Build a Personal Financial Plan") five.

Poland, which relies on Russia for about 50% of its gas consumption or around 10 bcm, has said it can [source gas via two links with Germany](https://www.financedigest.com/exclusive-germany-qatar-at-odds-over-terms-in-talks-on-lng-supply-deal-sources.html "Exclusive-Germany, Qatar at odds over terms in talks on LNG supply deal -sources"). A new pipeline allowing up to 10 bcm of gas per [year to flow between Poland and Norway will be opened](https://www.financedigest.com/uaes-adnoc-to-open-swiss-trading-office-next-year.html "UAE’s ADNOC to open Swiss trading office next year") in October. A new gas link between Poland and Slovakia was also commissioned last week.

Spain wants to [revive a project to build](https://www.financedigest.com/cricket-fiery-stokes-revives-england-but-s-africa-build-good-lead.html "Cricket-Fiery Stokes revives England but S Africa build good lead") a third gas connection through the Pyrennes mountains but France has said new LNG terminals, which can be made to float, would be a quicker and cheaper option than a new pipeline.

OTHER OPTIONS TO COPE WITH A GAS SUPPLY CRUNCH?

Several nations can [seek to fill any gap in energy supplies](https://www.financedigest.com/ges-investors-seek-solutions-to-renewable-energy-supply-chain-challenges.html "GE’s investors seek solutions to renewable energy, supply chain challenges") by turning to electricity imports via interconnectors from their neighbours or by boosting power generation from nuclear, renewables, hydropower or coal.

Nuclear availability is falling in Belgium, Britain, [France and Germany with plants facing](https://www.financedigest.com/air-france-and-airbus-face-french-court-over-rio-paris-crash.html "Air France and Airbus face French court over Rio-Paris crash") outages as they age, are decommissioned or phased out. Hydro levels have been [falling this summer due to low](https://www.financedigest.com/dollar-falls-to-nine-month-low-as-powell-notes-progress-in-disinflation.html "Dollar falls to nine-month low as Powell notes progress in disinflation") rainfall and a heatwave.

Europe has been trying to shift from coal to meet [climate targets but some plants have been switched back](https://www.financedigest.com/institutional-investors-back-shell-board-lawsuit-over-climate-risk.html "Institutional investors back Shell board lawsuit over climate risk") on since mid-2021 because of surging gas prices.

[Energy ministers agreed that all EU countries should voluntarily cut](https://www.financedigest.com/france-strains-to-avert-power-cuts-as-cold-snap-tests-europes-energy-resolve.html "France strains to avert power cuts as cold snap tests Europe’s energy resolve") gas use by 15% from August to March, compared with their average annual use during 2017-2021 and introduced EU-wide targets for refilling gas storage.

[Germany has triggered stage two of its three-stage emergency gas plan and urged businesses and consumers](https://www.financedigest.com/germany-to-lower-sales-tax-on-gas-to-7-in-bid-to-relieve-consumers.html "Germany to lower sales tax on gas to 7% in bid to relieve consumers") to save gas to avoid forced rationing.

The Dutch energy minister has said its Groningen field could be called upon to help neighbouring countries in the event of a complete cut-off in Russian [supply but ramping up production would risk](https://www.financedigest.com/minimising-supply-chain-cyber-risks-by-asking-the-right-questions.html "MINIMISING SUPPLY CHAIN CYBER RISKS BY ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS") causing earthquakes.
