BERLIN (Reuters) – The night has a different colour in parts of Berlin where the streets are lit by gas: the light more ethereal and the shadows deeper. But these areas could be plunged into darkness if Germany declares a heightened gas emergency in the autumn.

Berlin has the world’s largest surviving gaslight network, mainly in the western part, where Charlottenburg’s stately boulevards are bathed in the ghostly light that lit much of the world in the 19th century.

What was once a quirky curiosity easily afforded by the capital of a wealthy country is now a problem for [city authorities as Germany prepares for a future](https://www.financedigest.com/investing-in-the-city-thats-investing-in-itself-welcome-to-the-liverpool-of-the-future.html "INVESTING IN THE CITY THAT’S INVESTING IN ITSELF – WELCOME TO THE LIVERPOOL OF THE FUTURE!  ") without the Russian gas that has fueled its industry for decades.

[Fears Moscow could further dial back](https://www.financedigest.com/fear-of-failure-holding-back-british-entrepreneurs-new-research-finds.html "Fear Of Failure Holding Back British Entrepreneurs, New Research Finds") gas deliveries after its invasion of Ukraine have prompted Berlin to accelerate plans to replace its 23,000 remaining gaslights.

The most important thing is to [speed up their replacement by electric](https://www.financedigest.com/vw-to-speed-up-electric-shift-in-five-year-plan.html "VW to speed up electric shift in five-year plan") lights,” said Benedikt Lux, a Green member of the transport committee in the city parliament.

In addition to the imminent possible cut in gas supplies, replacing the gas lights could help alleviate [climate change](https://www.financedigest.com/scientists-in-germany-turn-up-heat-on-seagrass-in-climate-change-fight.html "Scientists in Germany turn up heat on seagrass in climate change fight"), Lux said.

The federal government could declare a Level Three [gas emergency if supplies](https://www.financedigest.com/europes-alternatives-if-russia-shuts-off-gas-supply.html "Europe’s alternatives if Russia shuts off gas supply") dwindle further, and Lux fears that could force Berlin to switch those lights off.

Speeding things up involves ugly shortcuts: instead of laboriously wiring up ornate cast-iron masts, the oldest of them from 1906, with modern LEDs at a [cost of up to 10,000 euros](https://www.financedigest.com/analysis-euros-20-year-low-leaves-ecb-facing-costly-choices.html "Analysis-Euro’s 20-year low leaves ECB facing costly choices") ($10,120) each, some will be replaced with aluminium copies.

To [save time](https://www.financedigest.com/how-to-use-algorithms-to-save-time-and-make-money-when-trading-currency-crypto-shares-etc.html "How to use algorithms to save time and make money when trading (currency, crypto, shares etc)"), cables could be draped between them to avoid digging up roads.

Enthusiasts aren’t happy.

Berlin is almost the last [city in the world](https://www.financedigest.com/uks-most-liveable-city-manchester-sets-its-sights-on-the-world-from-tourists-to-property-investors.html "UK’s most liveable city, Manchester sets its sights on the world, from tourists to property investors") where you can take a night stroll and sip a coffee by gaslight,” said Bertold Kujath, head of Gaslight Culture, a foundation dedicated to their preservation.

New neighbourhoods should be lit electrically, he says, but the gaslit neighbourhoods’ distinctive character should be preserved, with the gas – equivalent to some 4,500 kWh a year per lamp, costing the city 6.5 [million euros](https://www.financedigest.com/hellofresh-sees-2023-core-profit-of-460-540-million-euros.html "HelloFresh sees 2023 core profit of 460-540 million euros") – a drop in the ocean compared to the cuts Germany must make.

Even the newest LEDs cannot fully imitate the colour of a tiny flame [heating a rare-earth gas](https://www.financedigest.com/german-heat-pump-bonanza-test-industrys-resilience-in-russian-gas-crunch.html "German heat pump bonanza test industry’s resilience in Russian gas crunch") mantle causing it to shine brilliantly, he said. And LEDs attract more insects than gas, killing hundreds of them a night, he warns.

But the city will not be deterred. Current [plans envisage preserving some 3,000 gas](https://www.financedigest.com/norway-plans-to-nationalise-gas-pipelines-when-concessions-expire.html "Norway plans to nationalise gas pipelines when concessions expire") lamps in older, villagey neighbourhoods. But Lux has his [doubts – even that could be a luxury in an era of climate](https://www.financedigest.com/inflation-fighting-central-bankers-air-climate-role-doubts.html "Inflation fighting central bankers air climate role doubts") change.
