# Cryptoverse-Tether gets a lift from stability doubts

By Tom Wilson and Vidya Ranganathan

(Reuters) – Digital stablecoin tether is winning the race for the title of the crypto world’s “least risky” asset.

As a regional U.S. [banking crisis](https://www.financedigest.com/explainer-why-is-bank-of-england-acting-again-what-next-in-the-uk-crisis-2.html "Explainer-Why is Bank of England acting again? What next in the UK crisis?") widens and a regulatory crackdown on crypto firms deepens, investments within the cryptosphere are moving into tokens and coins perceived as relatively safe.

Tether is already the top performer among stablecoins — digital tokens pegged to some fiat asset like the dollar — and has seen its [market value](https://www.financedigest.com/analgesics-market-value-surpasses-us-77-3-bn-as-demand-for-nsaids-rise-at-4-1-fmi.html "Analgesics Market Value Surpasses US$ 77.3 Bn as Demand for NSAID’s Rise at 4.1%: FMI") soar since March.

Its value is anchored by a 1-to-1 peg against a cache of dollars and a supply cap at around 85 billion tokens. [Demand for the coin has been so strong](https://www.financedigest.com/produced-water-treatment-systems-market-fuelled-by-strong-demand-in-north-america.html "Produced Water Treatment Systems Market Fuelled by Strong Demand in North America") that its peg has held above 1 since mid-April, hitting 1.002 last week.

The [banking crisis](https://www.financedigest.com/explainer-why-is-bank-of-england-acting-again-what-next-in-the-uk-crisis.html "Explainer-Why is Bank of England acting again? What next in the UK crisis?") is fuelling ‘hyper-bitcoinisation’ – the inevitable endgame that the dollar will be worthless,” said Anders Kvamme Jensen, Oslo-based founder of the AKJ global brokerage and digital asset specialist.

That has spurred a flight to top cryptocurrencies such as [bitcoin and ether](https://www.financedigest.com/cryptoverse-ether-snaps-at-bitcoins-heels-in-race-for-crypto-crown.html "Cryptoverse: Ether snaps at bitcoin’s heels in race for crypto crown"), Jensen said.

Pegged stablecoins such as tether, meanwhile, are seen more as a store of value and as a tool to facilitate transfers between [cryptocurrencies and also serve as collateral for derivative trades](https://www.financedigest.com/why-cryptocurrency-trading-will-surpass-forex-trading-in-2023.html "Why Cryptocurrency trading will surpass Forex Trading in 2023").

Conor Ryder, research analyst at [digital assets](https://www.financedigest.com/how-financial-services-organisations-can-address-the-vulnerability-lag-and-safeguard-their-most-important-digital-assets.html "How financial services organisations can address the ‘Vulnerability Lag’ and safeguard their most important digital assets") data provider Kaiko, says tether’s premium reflects emerging trust in both the peg and in its perceived safety from the U.S. [Securities and Exchange](https://www.financedigest.com/vaultbank-exchange-launches-in-beta-opening-security-tokens-for-trading.html "Vaultbank Exchange Launches in Beta, Opening Security Tokens for Trading") Commission (SEC).

Tether is owned by iFinex Inc, a company registered in British Virgin Islands which also owns the Bitfinex [cryptocurrency exchange](https://www.financedigest.com/verasity-vra-lists-on-tier-1-cryptocurrency-exchange-crypto-com.html "Verasity $VRA Lists on Tier-1 Cryptocurrency Exchange Crypto.com").

Tether’s main rival USDC, managed by Boston-based Circle, has been hurt by the revelation of its exposure to collapsed [Silicon Valley Bank](https://www.financedigest.com/kpmg-stands-by-audits-of-silicon-valley-bank-and-signature-bank-ft.html "KPMG stands by audits of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank – FT") and the SEC’s scrutiny of fintech and crypto firms.

Another major stablecoin, BUSD, or the [Binance USD](https://www.financedigest.com/binance-to-convert-users-usd-coin-into-its-own-stablecoin.html "Binance to convert users’ USD Coin into its own stablecoin") token, has seen a decline since its developers said they would cease issuing new tokens after U.S. regulators labelled the [asset an unregistered security](https://www.financedigest.com/rambus-unveils-vaultify-trade-for-secure-transaction-and-storage-of-crypto-assets-on-blockchain.html "Rambus Unveils Vaultify Trade for Secure Transaction and Storage of Crypto Assets on Blockchain").

The DAI [token has been bogged down because of its unusual peg to reserves that include other stablecoins and crypto](https://www.financedigest.com/lisk-announces-lsk-token-listed-on-bitflyer-the-european-unions-newest-crypto-exchange.html "Lisk announces LSK token listed on bitFlyer, the European Union’s newest crypto exchange") currencies.

“Tether is seen as less U.S.-oriented, meaning lower [regulatory risk](https://www.financedigest.com/analysis-rbc-tightens-grip-at-home-with-10-billion-hsbc-canada-bid-regulatory-risks-loom.html "Analysis-RBC tightens grip at home with billion HSBC Canada bid, regulatory risks loom"). [Buying tether and bitcoin](https://www.financedigest.com/cryptoverse-buying-the-dip-bitcoins-a-rates-rookie.html "Cryptoverse: Buying the dip? On CoinMarketCap’s database of 23,891 tokens, tether has risen to number 3 with a [market cap of $82 bln and a share](https://www.financedigest.com/skull-deformity-implants-market-share-top-operating-players-recent-enhancements-and-regional-analysis-2028.html "Skull Deformity Implants Market Share, Top Operating Players, Recent Enhancements and Regional Analysis 2028") of 6.83%.

## NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS

To be sure, tether has long been dogged by doubts about its peg being backed by dollar reserves. All stablecoins were hurt last year during a series of events such as the collapse of crypto [hedge fund](https://www.financedigest.com/market-turmoil-a-boon-for-trend-following-hedge-funds.html "Market turmoil a boon for trend-following hedge funds") Three Arrows Capital, which followed the de-pegging of Terra USD and the failure of crypto exchange FTX.

The interesting paradox here is that [tether has become the industry’s most trusted stablecoin,”](https://www.financedigest.com/stablecoin-tether-hires-bdo-italia-for-monthly-proof-of-reserve-reports.html "Stablecoin Tether hires BDO Italia for monthly proof-of-reserve reports") says Ryder.

Tether’s safe [haven status](https://www.financedigest.com/cash-at-risk-of-losing-safe-haven-status-as-inflation-bites.html "Cash at risk of losing ‘safe haven’ status as inflation bites") differs from bitcoin in that it is providing a safe peg to $1, one of the only stablecoins in the space that can make that claim at the minute. Bitcoin on the other hand is seen as a safe haven from monetary debasement as a form of [money that is ‘outside’ the banking](https://www.financedigest.com/fiat-republic-the-specialist-baas-platform-that-bridges-the-gap-between-web3-and-traditional-banks-announces-it-has-become-an-electronic-money-institution-emi-in-the-uk.html "Fiat Republic, the specialist BaaS platform that bridges the gap between web3 and traditional banks, announces it has become an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) in the UK.") system.

[Bitcoin too has rallied some 73% this year](https://www.financedigest.com/cryptoverse-bitcoin-digs-in-for-a-bumpy-new-year.html "Cryptoverse: Bitcoin digs in for a bumpy new year"), after hitting resistance around $31,000 last month.
