Brits are still struggling to separate fact from fiction and debunk the most common electric car myths, new research by TeamSport has revealed.

With growth in the number of electric cars on the roads set to continue, the leading karting company researched the nation’s attitudes towards electric cars and which myths the public still believes.

The survey revealed that the majority of drivers still don’t fully understand the performance capabilities of electric vehicles, with almost three-quarters (73%) of the nation incorrectly believing that electric cars are only suitable for short distance driving.

Another common myth is that there will not be enough docking stations for [electric cars](https://www.financedigest.com/electric-car-maker-lucid-on-track-for-2022-2023-output-targets-ceo-says.html "Electric car maker Lucid on track for 2022, 2023 output targets, CEO says") to ever become mainstream, with 72% of respondents believing this to be true. However, there are currently around 12,194 connectors for [electric vehicles](https://www.financedigest.com/china-greenlights-audi-faws-3-3-billion-electric-vehicle-venture.html "China greenlights Audi-FAW’s .3 billion electric vehicle venture"), in over 4,303 locations across the UK.

The results also highlighted that half of drivers (50%) think electric [cars](https://www.financedigest.com/analysis-when-do-electric-vehicles-become-cleaner-than-gasoline-cars.html "Analysis: When do electric vehicles become cleaner than gasoline cars?") are unreliable and a further 65% said they believe that electric vehicles are slower than petrol cars. Nearly two-thirds of the nation (62%) also believe that petrol cars give a better driving experience than [electric](https://www.financedigest.com/electric-car-insurance-your-questions-answered.html "Electric car insurance: your questions answered") cars.

Interestingly, almost half of respondents (47%) incorrectly believe that electric cars will be a strain on the national grid. Although [electric cars inevitably use a lot of power](https://www.financedigest.com/demand-for-electrical-safety-insulating-gloves-is-strong-in-the-power-utility-industry-unveils-fact-mr.html "Demand for Electrical Safety Insulating Gloves Is Strong In The Power Utility Industry Unveils Fact.MR"), home charging stations will operate only during off-peak hours – making them much more efficient.

One of the biggest myths around [electric cars is that the batteries](https://www.financedigest.com/global-market-study-on-battery-pack-for-marine-hybrid-full-electric-propulsion.html "Global Market Study on Battery Pack for Marine Hybrid & Full Electric Propulsion") can’t be recycled. However, Volkswagen, [Renault and Nissan](https://www.financedigest.com/nissan-pushes-partner-renault-to-sell-down-stake-may-raise-funds-source.html "Nissan pushes partner Renault to sell down stake, may raise funds -source") have all developed programs to recycle EV batteries once they drop to around 70% of their original capacity.

A third (36%) of respondents also believe that electric [car batteries](https://www.financedigest.com/scratched-ev-battery-your-insurer-may-have-to-junk-the-whole-car.html "Scratched EV battery? Your insurer may have to junk the whole car") will only last few years until they need replacing. According to the AA, [batteries in older electric vehicles](https://www.financedigest.com/tesla-tops-battery-electric-vehicle-registrations-in-germany-beating-volkswagen.html "Tesla tops battery-electric vehicle registrations in Germany, beating Volkswagen") (EVs) are aging better than expected and a number of manufactures are also offering warranties on batteries in new EVs.

Dominic Gaynor, Managing Director at TeamSport, said: “Electric cars are becoming more mainstream than ever, with [manufacturers developing](https://www.financedigest.com/automotive-mems-sensor-market-key-manufacturers-development-trends-and-competitive-analysis-2028.html "Automotive MEMS Sensor Market Key Manufacturers, Development Trends and Competitive Analysis 2028") vehicles that can stand the test of time against their petrol counterparts.

“We were very surprised to see that 62% of respondents thought that petrol cars give a better [driving experience than electric](https://www.financedigest.com/innovative-catalysis-to-drive-the-automotive-electrical-products-market.html "Innovative Catalysis To Drive The Automotive Electrical Products Market"). We have four tracks across the UK that feature [electric karts and having a go in one of our electric karts may be enough to change your opinion on electric vehicles](https://www.financedigest.com/stellantis-wont-race-to-split-electric-vehicles-from-fossil-fuel-cars.html "Stellantis won’t race to split electric vehicles from fossil fuel cars"). Many dedicated petrolheads have commented on how good the [driving experience is in an electric](https://www.financedigest.com/innovative-catalysis-to-drive-the-automotive-electrical-products-market-2.html "Innovative Catalysis To Drive The Automotive Electrical Products Market") kart.”

Sylvain Filippi, [Chief Technology Officer](https://www.financedigest.com/inmobi-names-inderbir-singh-pall-as-chief-technology-officer-of-inmobi-advertising-platform.html "InMobi Names Inderbir Singh Pall as Chief Technology Officer of InMobi Advertising Platform") at DS Virgin Racing, said: “Electric vehicle technology is still not understood by the public, which is ironic as in the early 1900s, all the best vehicles were electric. Cheap [oil meant the beginning](https://www.financedigest.com/explainer-the-g7s-price-cap-on-russian-oil-begins-to-take-shape.html "Explainer-The G7’s price cap on Russian oil begins to take shape") of affordable petrol cars for the masses, and we never looked back, until now. Internal [combustion engines](https://www.financedigest.com/mercedes-benz-launches-e-class-its-last-new-combustion-engine-model.html "Mercedes-Benz launches E-Class, its last new combustion engine model") have been the norm for decades, whereas credible EVs have only been brought back to market in the past five years, hence the lack of understanding of this technology.

“Statistics show that once someone tries an [electric vehicle](https://www.financedigest.com/taiwans-foxconn-shows-off-three-electric-vehicle-prototypes.html "Taiwan’s Foxconn shows off three electric vehicle prototypes"), the feedback is most of the time very positive. On a personal level, I drive a high performance electric car that definitely provides a fantastic driving experience. Instant torque is addictive, even compared to high performance petrol cars, and EVs designed from the [ground up with the batteries](https://www.financedigest.com/hyundai-breaks-ground-on-5-5-billion-u-s-ev-battery-plant.html "Hyundai breaks ground on .5 billion U.S. EV, battery plant") under the floor provide excellent chassis dynamics as well.

“Formula E has been growing exceptionally rapidly since its creation, and this is due to many factors. Firstly, the quality of racing is very high and the races are unpredictable and very entertaining for fans, who can’t predict which [driver is going to win](https://www.financedigest.com/automotive-balance-shaft-market-competitor-analysis-winning-strategies-and-growth-drivers-2025.html "Automotive Balance Shaft Market Competitor Analysis, Winning Strategies and Growth Drivers 2025") the race. Even though all [cars now have different EV technology](https://www.financedigest.com/how-technology-is-improving-car-safety.html "How technology is improving car safety") powering them, the performance of the field is still very close, allowing many overtakes and on-track action.

“Secondly, the EV technology being developed is highly relevant to the road [car industry](https://www.financedigest.com/german-car-industry-baulks-at-supplier-demands-over-energy-hikes.html "German car industry baulks at supplier demands over energy hikes"), which means that almost all the major car manufacturers are now joining or interested in joining the championship. The best drivers in the world are also joining the championship so the level of competition is very high.

“By providing fast and exciting racing, the FIA Formula E Championship will hopefully [change](https://www.financedigest.com/the-meta-trends-driving-positive-change-for-financial-services.html "The meta trends driving positive change for Financial Services") perceptions and make people realise that EVs can be fast and fun to drive.”

Sam Bird, a professional driver at Formula E said: “Electric [vehicles are the future](https://www.financedigest.com/plug-in-hybrid-electric-vehicles-phev-market-trends-growth-future-demand-analysis-and-forecast-by-2026.html "Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) Market Trends, Growth, Future Demand, Analysis and Forecast by 2026"). It’s exciting to think where technology might be in 10 years, and being involved in Formula E means we’re part of that journey”.
