BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazil has decided to resume entry visa requirements for citizens of the U.S., Japan, Australia and Canada, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday.

The country’s Foreign Ministry, known as Itamaraty, is [set to announce the decision on Thursday to the governments](https://www.financedigest.com/factbox-uk-government-sets-out-priorities-in-queens-speech.html "Factbox-UK government sets out priorities in Queen’s speech") of the four countries. Brazil’s government will later publicly [announce the measure](https://www.financedigest.com/lumen-research-and-tvision-announce-global-partnership-for-advanced-attention-first-measurement-and-media-buying.html "Lumen Research and TVision Announce Global Partnership for Advanced Attention-First Measurement and Media Buying").

The decision suspends a unilateral decision that [former President](https://www.financedigest.com/alderbrooke-appoints-former-vice-president-workforce-analytics-at-ibm-jonathan-ferrar-as-board-advisor.html "Alderbrooke appoints former Vice President, Workforce Analytics at IBM, Jonathan Ferrar as Board Advisor") Jair Bolsonaro’s government made in June 2019 to facilitate tourism.

Brazilians still need visas to [travel to the four countries](https://www.financedigest.com/best-countries-to-travel-to.html "Best countries to travel to").

A diplomatic source said the 2019 decision to lift visa [requirements had weakened Brazil’s ability](https://www.financedigest.com/lack-of-collaboration-and-skills-shortage-is-limiting-organisations-ability-to-meet-ifrs-9-requirements.html "Lack of collaboration and skills shortage is limiting organisations’ ability to meet IFRS 9 requirements") to negotiate with those countries.

Brazilian government [studies also showed the impact](https://www.financedigest.com/first-listener-wide-study-reveals-brand-impact-of-radio-livestream-and-podcasts.html "First listener-wide study reveals brand impact of Radio, Livestream, and Podcasts") on tourism numbers was minimal, though the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic may have also limited a potential boost.

The number of tourist arrivals from the U.S. – who represent a [small fraction](https://www.financedigest.com/the-rise-of-fractional-investing-accessing-high-value-assets-with-small-budgets.html "The rise of fractional investing: accessing high-value assets with small budgets") of tourists in Brazil – in 2022 was still below 2018 figures.

Meanwhile, the number of Japanese tourists fell in 2019 by 4.5% and only 17,000 visited Brazil in 2022.
