# Biden, Johnson, Trudeau pledge artillery for Ukraine in battle against Russia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged on Tuesday to send more artillery weaponry to Ukraine in the face of an all-out Russian assault on that country’s East.

Biden spoke with Johnson, Trudeau and other allied leaders in a [secure video call from the White House Situation Room as the Russian](https://www.financedigest.com/russian-threat-to-baltic-security-rising-estonian-intelligence-report.html "Russian threat to Baltic security rising – Estonian intelligence report") invasion reached a new phase.

Asked by reporters during a [visit to New Hampshire if the United States](https://www.financedigest.com/king-charles-hosts-first-state-visit-for-s-africas-ramaphosa.html "King Charles hosts first state visit for S.Africa’s Ramaphosa") would be sending more artillery to Ukraine, Biden replied yes.

In London, Johnson told lawmakers: “This will become an artillery conflict, they [need support](https://www.financedigest.com/hung-out-to-dry-smes-need-further-support-to-stay-afloat.html "Hung Out to Dry: SMEs need further support to stay afloat") with more artillery, that is what we will be giving them … in addition to many other forms of support.”

[Trudeau said Canada](https://www.financedigest.com/canada-pm-trudeau-planning-snap-election-seeks-approval-for-covid-response-sources.html "Canada PM Trudeau planning snap election, seeks approval for COVID response – sources") would be sending heavy artillery and promised to provide more details.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki told [reporters on Air Force One the leaders reaffirmed their commitment](https://www.financedigest.com/euronext-delays-commitment-of-traders-report-until-further-notice.html "Euronext delays commitment of traders report until further notice") to providing Ukraine security and economic and humanitarian assistance.

“We will continue to provide them more ammunition, as we will provide them more military assistance,” Psaki said. She said the United States was preparing another round of [sanctions to impose](https://www.financedigest.com/new-u-s-sanctions-imposed-for-russian-bank-oligarchs-crypto-miner-bitriver.html "New U.S. sanctions imposed for Russian bank, oligarchs, crypto miner BitRiver") on Moscow.

In their 90-minute video call, [Biden and the allies discussed](https://www.financedigest.com/new-zealand-pm-meets-biden-to-discuss-u-s-indo-pacific-strategy.html "New Zealand PM meets Biden to discuss U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy") their diplomatic engagements and coordinated efforts to further impose “severe economic costs to hold Russia accountable,” Psaki said.

They are to coordinate through the G7, the [European Union](https://www.financedigest.com/lisk-announces-lsk-token-listed-on-bitflyer-the-european-unions-newest-crypto-exchange.html "Lisk announces LSK token listed on bitFlyer, the European Union’s newest crypto exchange") and NATO, she said.

[Russia seized its first town in eastern Ukraine](https://www.financedigest.com/analysis-action-wanes-at-u-n-to-isolate-russia-almost-six-months-into-ukraine-war.html "Analysis: Action wanes at U.N. to isolate Russia almost six months into Ukraine war") as part of a fresh assault that Ukraine has described as the Battle of the Donbas aimed at taking two provinces.

The United States sees [Russia carrying out a “prelude” to larger offensive operations](https://www.financedigest.com/kfc-franchisees-in-russia-ask-govt-to-halt-sale-of-stores-to-local-operator-ria.html "KFC franchisees in Russia ask govt to halt sale of stores to local operator – RIA") in the eastern part of its neighboring country, a senior U.S. official said on Tuesday.

[Biden’s video call](https://www.financedigest.com/biden-begins-fifth-call-with-chinas-xi-looking-to-tamp-down-taiwan-tension.html "Biden begins fifth call with China’s Xi, looking to tamp down Taiwan tension") began at 9:57 a.m. EDT (1357 GMT) and ended at 11:21 a.m. EDT (1521 GMT), with Biden speaking from the White House Situation Room.

Others on the call included European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and [NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg](https://www.financedigest.com/finland-will-join-nato-on-tuesday-stoltenberg.html "Finland will join NATO on Tuesday – Stoltenberg") as well as the leaders of Italy, Japan and Poland.

A French presidential adviser said the allies had discussed how to provide security guarantees to [Ukraine after the war](https://www.financedigest.com/euro-zone-economy-sentiment-rises-in-dec-first-time-since-start-of-ukraine-war.html "Euro zone economy sentiment rises in Dec, first time since start of Ukraine war") if it is not part of NATO and its automatic defense mechanism known as Article 5.

Our country is ready to [provide security guarantees,” the French](https://www.financedigest.com/french-cloud-provider-ovh-lines-up-diesel-generators-to-offset-potential-power-cuts.html "French cloud provider OVH lines up diesel generators to offset potential power cuts") official said. It would be military [supplies so that it can deal](https://www.financedigest.com/pge-signs-wind-turbine-supply-deal-for-baltica-2.html "PGE signs wind turbine supply deal for Baltica 2") with a new attack or, possibly, guarantees that would see us get involved if Ukraine is attacked in a way where we could assess how to assist it.

These guarantees would look more like the defense clause the European [Union currently has among its members](https://www.financedigest.com/siscoop-collaborates-with-fiserv-to-become-first-in-mexico-to-enable-digital-and-mobile-banking-for-credit-union-members.html "SISCOOP Collaborates with Fiserv to Become First in Mexico to Enable Digital and Mobile Banking for Credit Union Members"), the French official said, rather than a defense mechanism similar to NATO’s Article 5, which triggers automatic military support if a member is attacked.

Allies also discussed the need to persuade non-EU, non-G7 countries to treat the [war in Ukraine](https://www.financedigest.com/ukraine-grants-citizenship-to-top-russian-journalist-who-denounced-war.html "Ukraine grants citizenship to top Russian journalist who denounced war") as an issue that concerns world peace and not just Europe or the West, the French official said.

[Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine](https://www.financedigest.com/russia-promises-to-scale-down-operations-in-northern-ukraine.html "Russia promises to scale down operations in northern Ukraine") on Feb. 24 in what it called a special operation to degrade its southern neighbour’s military capabilities and root out [people](https://www.financedigest.com/power-to-the-people-how-consumers-are-calling-the-shots-when-it-comes-to-data-privacy.html "Power to the people: how consumers are calling the shots when it comes to data privacy") it called dangerous nationalists. Ukrainian forces have mounted stiff resistance and the West has imposed sweeping [sanctions on Russia](https://www.financedigest.com/russia-unleashes-rockets-after-mariupol-ceasefire-eu-eyes-oil-sanctions.html "Russia unleashes rockets after Mariupol ceasefire, EU eyes oil sanctions") in an effort to force it to withdraw its forces.
