GitLab launched the public beta of its Duo Agent Platform in July 2025, introducing a coordination system that allows developers to work alongside specialized AI agents without requiring simultaneous interaction. The DevSecOps platform reported third-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue of $244.4 million, a 25% increase compared to the prior-year period.
Armistice Capital acquired shares of GitLab during the second quarter of 2025, establishing a position in the company as it advanced AI-powered development tools. Other institutional investors including Vanguard Group, BlackRock, and JPMorgan Chase also hold positions in the software development provider.
Agent Platform Transforms Development Workflows
The Duo Agent Platform marks GitLab's attempt to differentiate from competitors like GitHub Copilot and standalone tools such as Cursor by moving beyond single-developer code assistance. The platform allows multiple specialized AI agents to work on different tasks simultaneously—one generating code changes, another reviewing for vulnerabilities, a third analyzing project history—while developers continue other work.
Software Development Flow, the first capability available in public beta to Premium and Ultimate tier customers, coordinates multiple agents to gather project information, clarify ambiguous requirements, and implement code modifications. GitLab positions its existing role as a repository for development activity—tracking code structure, past modifications, merge requests, issues, and security scans—as an advantage over competitors.
"GitLab Duo Agent Platform isn't just another AI tool; it's a fundamental reimagining of software development from isolated, linear processes into dynamic, intelligent collaboration," said Bill Staples, CEO at GitLab.
Developers access the agents through VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, and GitLab's web interface using natural language prompts or structured slash commands. The platform supports connections to external project management systems including Jira, ServiceNow, and Zendesk through the Model Context Protocol.
GitLab's December 2025 release of version 18.7 included analytics tools tracking Duo adoption patterns, code generation volumes, and development metrics such as deployment frequency and merge times across six-month periods. The analytics capabilities allow organizations to measure whether AI features affect development velocity.
Third-Quarter Financial Performance
Gitlab's third-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue reached $244.4 million, representing 25% growth year-over-year. Non-GAAP operating margin expanded to 18%, while GAAP operating margin improved to negative 5%.
Operating cash flow totaled $31.4 million, with non-GAAP adjusted free cash flow reaching $27.2 million during the quarter.
The number of customers paying GitLab at least $100,000 annually grew 25% year-over-year. Growth in this high-value customer segment indicates continued enterprise adoption of GitLab's platform despite competitive pressures from Microsoft's GitHub and standalone AI coding tools.
"More code means more of a need for GitLab," said Staples. "Engagement is growing across our platform as we are a critical part of how our customers deliver high quality, secure software."
Leadership Changes and Platform Expansion
GitLab announced Jessica Ross will join as Chief Financial Officer effective January 15, 2026. Ross joins from Frontdoor, where she served as CFO, bringing more than 25 years of finance and operational leadership experience from companies including Salesforce and Stitch Fix.
The company expanded its Duo Agent Platform during the third quarter with additional purpose-built AI agents, launched an AI Catalog allowing customers to create custom agents, and integrated external agents including Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, and Google Gemini. GitLab received recognition as a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for DevOps Platforms for the third consecutive year and for AI Code Assistants for the second consecutive year.
GitLab's AI integration approach differs from prompt-to-prototype tools by applying autonomous agents to handle routine development tasks including testing, security scanning, and code review rather than generating basic applications. The platform's specialized agents operate in parallel, with defined roles for development, testing, security analysis, and deep research.
"We've architected GitLab and Duo Agent Platform to provide intelligent orchestration across the software lifecycle, facilitate trust and accuracy in an AI world, and help accelerate the end to end software delivery process required to win," Staples said during the third-quarter earnings call.
Institutional Investment Activity
Institutional investors hold approximately 95% of GitLab's outstanding shares. Vanguard Group owns 8.14% of the company shares, while BlackRock holds 6.84%. JPMorgan Chase maintains 4.29% ownership, and Norges Bank holds 3.00%.
Funds increasing or establishing substantial GitLab positions in 2025 include Armistice Capital, ARK Investment Management, and William Blair Investment Management.
GitLab's market capitalization stood at approximately $6.1 billion as of early January 2026. The stock has traded in a 52-week range reflecting broader market volatility affecting software companies as investors evaluate AI investment returns and enterprise software spending patterns.
